Have done it many times, but it depends on the pre-conceived quality of the film. For old Jackie Chan flicks, I'll try the dubbed version. For something like 'The Secret in Their Eyes' or 'The Bicycle Thief', I'm happy to read and catch the emotions of the actors even if I don't understand the words.

It is somewhat necessary unless you’re a polyglot. Subtitles do
no distract me. Non-Hollywood indie films can be excellent and you can
still find a turd of a foreign film with ease. Europe has produced plenty of
cinematic garbage. That being said, I love great foreign films. From anywhere.
