In the US Army in the 1970s we called the bullet-holders we stuck into personal firearms 'clips'. I was in DivArty. A 'magazine' was where artillery shells were stored. It was not to be inserted into an M16A2. Do not conflate unless you desire a royal ass-chewing. YMMV, grasshopper.
