Millions of computers infected after visiting pornhub

It is one of the most-visited porn websites in the world - not that many folks will admit it.
Now it has emerged that xxx site Pornhub has apparently been hit by a 'year-long' cyber attack which has installed virusses on millions of computers.
Research by cybersecurity firm Proofpoint reveals a huge cyber attack using 'malvertising' which presented fake banners for web browser updates to people visiting Pornhub.
Proofpoint says the attack was going on for more than a year and had affected millions of computers across the world.
The attack has since been shut down by the Canadian based Pornhub which, according to ranker Alexa, was the 25th most visited website in the world as of June 2017.
Hacking group TovCoreG carried out the attack in an attempt to infect site visitors' computers with the Kovter virus, it is reported.
This type of virus software is traditionally used as a form of online advertising fraud to generate cash through clicks on fake adverts.
In some cases a "clickbot" is installed which then requests and interacts with random adverting online.
In the case of Pornhub, Proofpoint said users were shown fake adverts urging them to click to download a newer version or Flash update to their web browser - but would instead infect their computers.
Pornhub did not want to comment on the incident.
Proofpoint warned that this technique of tricking users into clicking on fake adverts and infecting themselves was very effective, and had the potential to reach "millions of computers" if used elsewhere.
"While the payload in this case is ad fraud malware, it could just as easily have been ransomware, an information stealer, or any other malware," the company said.
"Regardless, threat actors are following the cash and looking to more effective combinations of social engineering, targeting, and pre-filtering to infect new computers at scale."
