  • Iranian officials declared a public health emergency in response, and warned the public of toxic pollutants spreading through the air after the blast.
  • The explosion happened at the Shahid Rajaee port in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
  • The cause of the explosion is not yet clear. “Recklessness in storing flammable material” has been discussed as a possibility, according to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Iranian state media.
  • Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, expressed “deep regret and sympathy for the victims” and ordered an investigation into the incident, which he described as an “accident” in a statement on X.
  • The explosion happened against the backdrop of preliminary talks between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program. Both sides spoke for four hours and described the talks as positive.

'accident'? a faction pissed off with another over the Iran/US talks? a political attack on Iran to make them more pliable in the talks? Any and every option plausible enough for a tv story plot... shame this is real life.

Probably just an accident at the port involving the improper storage of hazardous materials.

You are correct, though.

Nothing can be discounted.

😑

If it is not an accident, then I guess the first place to look would be Israeli intelligence. (As opposed to some Iranian dissident faction.)

But it is most likely an accident. Occam's Razor.

Whoa, that was a good one. Apocalyptic scenes in Bandar Abbas. Many casualties. The entire port is covered in smoke and fire. The regime is calling it an accidental blast and nothing deliberate. The Bandar Abbas explosion was so powerful it destroyed buildings and injured people 100s of meters away. The fire is still burning in Bandar Abbas 🇮🇷 - the second largest container port in the region. Large parts of the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas have been entirely destroyed by this morning’s explosion. Hundreds have been injured in today’s explosion. Hospitals in Bandar Abbas are urgently calling for blood donations.

The closest footage we have gotten so far of the moments leading up to this morning’s explosion at the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. Orange smoke, likely nitrogen dioxide, being produced by a fire interacting with a still unknown chemical can be seen right before the explosion occurs; chemical compounds that would produce such smoke as well as the blast include ammonium nitrate, nitrogen tetroxide and nitric acid, all of which are likely to have been stored at Bandar Abbas. The Mad Mullah's hard at work.....A person close to the Revolutionary Guards confirms to the New York Times: The substance that exploded in a container at the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran is sodium perchlorate, a chemical used to produce solid rocket fuel.
