A big high pressure out in the Atlantic, a high pressure north of Texas, and a cold front (Low Pressure) hanging along the Gulf and East coast. It will turn along the path of least resistance. The only problem is once it gets inland, it will be trapped by a High pressure to the north. Large amounts of rain. Nothing like we had but big enough.

I've not seen current charts -- am I correct in assuming the shallow Gulf waters are warmer than the Atlantic and so will provide more energy, keeping Irma alive and pounding longer than if she went up the east coast?

At the present time, the straits between Cuba and Florida are 86-88 degrees, the warmest water in the Gulf. That area is where the Gulf Stream starts or is assembled according to how you want to look at it. It was a 3 when it left the Cuban coast and will be a high 4 by the time it hits Florida. Helping that, the forward speed has slowed from 14 mph to 9 mph, giving it even more time over the hot water.

Hot water, tropical moister in the air, and give it a spin. Instant Hurricane.

Alternatively, we could merely anchor the epoxied peninsula to the sea floor, cut loose the north end, squirt foam under it, and let it float like a diving platform. Storms might rock the state a bit but it won't sink. Probably.

There ya go screwing around with one corner of the Bermuda Triangle. It's bad enough to screw around with the state that has the only river around the northern hemisphere that flows the wrong way. But then again we could turn the whole thing around and correct that. Not to mention the nice new inter-coastal that would be created when Miami gets to Georgia.

The way a Florida booster doesn't like. But if we raise Florida by a couple meters, say by squirting fill or foam under the state, we can tip it the other way and fix that. Drain the Great Dismal Swamp through Miami. That'll clean-up the place a bit.

The St. Johns is the only river I knew about that flowed north in the top half of the world but then again, I ain't been everywhere.

Since Florida for the most part is a reef, jacking it up will be a major problem. Not to mention, it will let all the water flow right out of the state. Not a good move.
