concerning a nine millimeter gun.

The safety should be off. Not sure if a bullet is in the chamber.

Husband tells me that if no bullet is in the chamber on the first shoot, another bullet pops another one up so...

...if I shoot and nothing happens...I can just shoot again and hit my target?

Has Husband read the gun's manual? For some gun models it's a bug, and for others it's a feature.

I thought it took recoil to load another round into chamber unless done manually. Pull back slide and allow mag spring to insert round. I think. Only ever had just a simple familiarization sessions with semi-auto pistols. 9mm Browning.

Good question, but he is away right now. He is also an ex-Army sharp-shooter with awards so....

I should just take his advice? I'm sorry but guns scare the crap out of me.

I'm still wondering if the first shot will hit anyone who comes thru my locked bedroom door.

Or, as husband says....the second shot and the next several will hit the target.

It all depends on the model. If you don't have a manual, take it to a shooting range and figure it out there.

hahaha....no, he's out of town. He just wants me to be safe.

Married 35 years now. The man loves me.:heart::heart:

He left you with a 9mm with zero experience...yeah, he loves you. If a bullet gets jammed just blow down the barrel while pulling the trigger, it should loosen it a bit.

Are you talking about shooting this thing with zero firearms experience? Why in the hell hasn't he taught you how to shoot and how to at least load and ready a gun, if he expects you to protect yourself?

To shoot a semi-automatic pistol several things need to be in place:
1) The magazine must have ammo loaded into it.
2)There has to be a round in the firing chamber
3) The safety has to be off
If all three of those conditions are not met it will not fire. If you pull the trigger and hear a click, it won't do you any good to pull it again because you either dropped the hammer on an empty chamber or had a dud round.
In the above instance you must pull the slide back to chamber a round. If that is done and you pull the trigger it will fire and automatically chamber the next round so all you have to do to fire subsequent rounds is to pull the trigger.

All that being said my advise: Put the damn thing back in the safe and get a baseball bat. By using a gun without knowing the first thing about it you are more of a danger to yourself then any one else. And when your husband gets home demand he teaches you about guns. He might be an ex army sharp shooter but he needs to learn a bunch about teaching someone to handle a gun FFS!

This ^^^^^^

Maybe more of a danger to sleeping kids in next room separated by only a couple of layers of drywall except for a 2x4 every 16 to 24 inches.

In a panic situation, your first shot is probably your best one.

Read the manual. Pull the mag out. Rack the slide to take the round out of the chamber, if there is one. Then, you know.

Although i should advise you contact a licensed shooter whos competent
In training..... Like everything, uboob to the rescue. Hope it helps. Stay safe and be careful.

I'm sure this has already been answered but if you pull the trigger on the empty chamber of an automatic, it does not cause the slide to engage and thus no round will come up from the magazine.

ok...so I'll have to resort to beating the intruder over the head with it. Lovely.

I have a dildo laying on my bedside table that'll probably do more damage.

Thanks Mr. Gump.

Also, thank you all who popped in to give advice. appreciate it!

That does not seem right.

If no bullet is in the chamber, there's nothing that's gonna make another pop up...

If you shoot, and nothing happens, what does it mean, if u hear nothing, if it clicks only, or if you hear a bang but no desired result?

Darlin'...I'm afraid of firearms. I only wanted one next to my bed as my husband is out of town for a while.

I'm not brave enough to test it.

It's a one in a million chance that something bad will happen while he's away. I'll just ride on that.

I'll get it all figured out before his next trip. :)

Oh I see.

So, you got a 9mm and were all excited :)
