Harris county grand jury has cleared Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood did not sell organs of aborted fetuses.

Anti abortionists profit from falsehoods, criminal acts, and edited videos

"In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, Planned Parenthood claims the activists used fake IDs, signed non-disclosure agreements they had no intention of keeping, and even “stole one woman’s identity” in order to gain access to closed-door conferences with abortion providers, meetings with top Planned Parenthood staff and, ultimately, clinics in Denver and Houston."

"...in a letter to Planned Parenthood last year, the state health department’s inspector general said the videos proved “you and your Planned Parenthood affiliates are no longer capable of performing medical services in a professionally competent, safe, legal, and ethical manner.” An HHSC spokesman wouldn’t answer questions Monday afternoon about what impact Monday's indictments might have on the state's plan to end Planned Parenthood's status as a Medicaid provider."

Texas Health and Human Services Commission said it will drop Planned Parenthood from the Medicaid program

"Citing the videos as evidence, state health officials took the very bold step of kicking Planned Parenthood out of the state Medicaid program, which the feds say Texas cannot legally do."

On Monday Paxton actually reiterated the importance of those videos, saying in a statement: “The fact remains that the videos exposed the horrific nature of abortion and the shameful disregard for human life in the abortion industry.

July, Gov. Greg Abbott launched an investigation into Planned Parenthood’s practices following the release of undercover, highly edited videos attempting to showcase the sale of fetal tissue. Filmed by fervent anti-choice activist group the Center for Medical Progress, the dubious videos have been widely debunked, but that didn’t stop Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton, or Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick from going after the health provider. Over the summer, Patrick called for a special meeting at the Capitol to debate the issue. The hearing amounted to a witch hunt led by testimony from anti-choice groups.

David Daleiden, director of the Center for Medical Progress, and Sandra Merritt were both indicted for tampering with a governmental record, a second-degree felony. Daleiden, who spurred the creation of a fictional biomedical company to procure fetal tissue, also received an indictment for prohibition of the purchase and sale of human organs.

"t's great news because it demonstrates what we have said from the very beginning, which is that Planned Parenthood is following every rule and regulation, and that these people came into our buildings under the guise of health when their true intentions were to spread lies," said Rochelle Tafolla, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, which runs the Houston clinic as well as facilities in Louisiana.

The videographers who secretly filmed Houston Planned Parenthood officials discussing fetal tissue used fake driver's licenses to infiltrate the organization, according to charging documents filed Monday in Harris County.

David Robert Daleiden, of San Jose, Calif., and Sandra Susan Merritt, of Davis, Calif., each used a different California driver's license "with knowledge of its falsity...and with the intent to defraud and harm another," according to the documents, which were filed in 338th Criminal Court.

The documents were made available Tuesday, a day after Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson announced that a grand jury had indicted Daleiden and Merritt on charges of tampering with a governmental record, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Daleiden, the leader of the videographers, also was charged with the purchase or sale of human organs, presumably because he offered to buy to provoke Planned Parenthood into saying it would sell.

Copies of the alleged fake driver's licenses, which were included in the documents, indicate that Daleiden presented himself as Robert David Sarkis and Merritt posed as Susan Sarah

"From what I read, somehow the charge is that they falsified government identities because that's true obviously, that's not good, but I only know what I read at this point, but I think it's pretty clear that we now know what goes on in Planned Parenthood clinics," she said. "Here's what I know: Planned Parenthood has been trafficking in body parts. Planned Parenthood has been altering late-term abortion techniques to this specific purpose of harvesting body parts."

What a slime ball she is.

Watching Greater Boston, on my local wgbh tv station.

Jennifer C. Cabranes a lawyer, married a lawyer and became Jennifer Braceras in 1997.
She was 29 years old. She benefited from the Massachusetts school system, and she attended UMass Amherst. She moved on, to benefit from Ivy league universities.

Today, Jennifer C. Cabranes took the position identical to the a hard line anti- choice attitude generated from the Center for Medical Progress. She proclaims that the four videos used against Planned Parenthood are legitimate. She defends David Daleiden, director of the Center for Medical Progress, and Sandra Merritt for their "undercover operation." ( Even though the two have been indicted by a grand jury. She is a lawyer, and should take note of what the difference is, between a moral judgement and a decision to deliberately break the law.)

"...indictment for prohibition of the purchase and sale of human organs, for the two from the Center for Medical Progress." Jennifer Cabranes insists that they were only pretending to buy fetal body parts, and that the company they were pretending to buy for, was a fictional company.

She fluffs the issue of wrongdoing on the part of Planned Parenthood. If Planned Parenthood had been on the wrong side of the law, there would have been indictments. There were none!

"After two months of review, a Harris County grand jury chose not to indict Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast over allegations of unlawful misconduct on Monday..."

She insists that Planned Parenthood is "trafficking in fetal body parts."

She writes for the Boston Herald newspaper, which insisted that the scandal involving Boston priests, had no grounds in reality. ( Millions of dollars paid by the Vatican, to those who sued) She also writes for the New Boston Post, which is enthusiastic about the Pro Life March in Washington D.C....

Truth has very little to do with the goals of Anti- abortion activists.
The goal is to starve Planned Parenthood of resources and money.
The goal is to put pregnancy issues into the control of the Religious Right and their business allies.

The goal is to end abortion access. The goal is to end birth control access.
The goal is to profit from the pain, misery, and suffering of women, in order to construct a more powerful Republican alliance.

They are so committed to operating in a fraudulent manner, they are trying to make it legal for doctors and nurses and unqualified fake medical assistants to lie and mislead their patients. Anti- abortion activists want to make it legal to supply their patients with medical misinformation.

War on abortion, it seems, makes women and their fetuses the collateral damage.
Suffering of the innocent does not matter to them.

"... announced a grand jury has indicted two anti-abortion activists who made undercover videos alleging Planned Parenthood illegally sold fetal tissue to researchers for a profit, and said the abortion provider committed no wrong.

"A grand jury's decision to indict two anti-abortion activists who made undercover videos about Planned Parenthood might be less about sending someone to jail than about expressing disapproval for how the pair conducted their investigation, legal experts said Tuesday."

(David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt)

The Texas video was the fifth released by the Irvine, California-based Center for Medical Progress, which Daleiden founded.

Despite the center's lofty name, public filings suggest only a small number of people are affiliated with the nonprofit, none of whom are scientists or physicians engaged in advancing medical treatments. The people named as its top officers are longtime anti-abortion activists with a history of generating headlines.

Earlier this month, Planned Parenthood sued the center in a California federal court, alleging extensive criminal misconduct.

(Associated Press writers Paul J. Weber and Will Weissert in Austin and David Crary in New York contributed to this report.)

WHAT IS THE CENTER FOR MEDICAL PROGRESS?

The center is a nonprofit organization that described its mission in a 2013 application to the state of California as to "monitor and report on medical ethics and advances."

Public filings show a handful of people associated with the organization are longtime anti-abortion activists. The addresses for the group listed in public filings are postal drops in Sacramento and Irvine, California. Based on its submissions to the IRS, the center took in less than $50,000 in 2014 and thus did not have to disclose its donors. CEO David Daleiden is the only salaried member of the group, receiving $30,000 a year.

He is the former director of research for the anti-abortion group Live Action, which is known for using undercover videos to target Planned Parenthood. Daleiden was indicted in Houston on Monday on a felony charge of tampering with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to purchasing human organs. Another anti-abortion activist, Sandra Merritt, was also indicted on a charge of tampering with a governmental record.

Troy Newman, listed as the center's secretary, is president of the Kansas-based anti-abortion group Operation Rescue and has posed as a reporter to record conversations with abortion providers in the past.

Albin Rhomberg, the center's chief financial officer, was arrested in 1991 for disrupting a church service during the inauguration of California Gov. Pete Wilson, an abortion-rights Republican.

gsgs comment- WOW! I did not expect to read about an abortion rights Republican.
/end gsgs comment

In 2005, he led an unsuccessful attempt to pass a California ballot measure requiring doctors to notify parents or guardians before performing abortions on minors. Nichole Surkala, who is listed as the center's contact if it is sued, was convicted in California in 2007 of willful cruelty to her 12-year-old son, according to court papers.

Police found she kept a horse and seven dogs in a house in Modesto that was filled with animal feces and rotting produce.

I actually think this could be worth reading but it's so wordy. I really wish I had cliff notes.

Research is important and we use cadavers already. I think a dead fetus should be considered a cadaver and subject to the same restrictions.

I agree. I never make it far into gotsnowgotslush's posts. It's not that I don't agree with where they're going--they take so long to go anywhere.

I am glad PP got their day in court and were cleared of all accusations. The fact that these anti-choice folks now must contend with their own pending legal matters is karma.

What I want to know given that they are so rabid about their anti-choice position do they understand what they did was wrong? I believe if there aren't stiff penalties attached to their actions we are going to see them again in another few years. Perhaps Congress.

I have always considered the same thing to be what is sometimes called "A tempest in a teapot." As far as I'm concerned PP broke no law and did nothing except serve humanity.

The girls or women who were pregnant always had to give their consent to use the fetuses for research or other good purposes. It's illegal to sell body parts - that is, I would not be allowed to sell a kidney to somebody - but donations are not illegal, and that's what the women were doing. There is no real difference between that and people donating their bodies to science upon death, except an aborted fetus was never a person.

There was never a sale by anybody. The charges made by PP were just for shipping and processing because they had to be careful to keep the wanted part intact. I don't know how much benefit was gained by the use of the fetal parts, but I would presume the researchers know what they're doing.

As for the fetal parts that were not used, they were buried or burned or otherwise treated like garbage. I wonder if anybody complained about that.

He/she did make a very short one about Hillary. I read it! But didn't click any links.

I need to look at the profile, I don't know if this is a man or woman. Writing they feels weird.

Wherever you land on the abortion debate...describing the process using this language is abhorrent. If they were discussing a protected species of animals...I doubt people would look the other way.
If you think that language is abhorrent, try spending a week or two among medical students.

Based on what I've read so far, investigative journalists have used similar tactics in the past and have received first amendment protections. One of the prosecutors(Lauren Reeder) also sits on the board of directors for Planned Parenthood. Seems likely a petit jury will acquit/dismiss the charges.
The anti-abortion DA who convened the grand jury and was surprised by their finding has said that Ms Reeder has zero connection to the PP case. Zero, none, no connection.

The felons here are not journalists nor cops. They broke specific Texas felony statutes. And EVERY investigation into PP around the country has found PP broke no laws. Zero, none, no violations.

The anti-PP witchhunt by the usual gang of creeps is not about protecting fetuses, but hating and controlling women, and rousing reactionary passions. It's one of the nastier games in town.

I would take some disagreement with that last paragraph. The people attacking PP are just anti-abortion. Some of their motivation may be controlling women, but that is mostly incidental.

Incidental to what? You have made unspecified claims (yet again).

Shall I run my anti-anti-choice rant? Here goes.

The legal question is of personhood. USA Constitution 14th Amendment refers to "persons born". And once you have been born, your existence is visually obvious. Your body is not contained in your mother's. You are indeed a separate person.

The anti-choice pretext is that an embryo, a portion of a woman's body, is a person and must be protected as such. The problem: How can the existence of an embryo be determined? Many pregnancies do not show until just before delivery. How can an unperceived fetus be protected?

A technical solution exists. Merely implant pregnancy monitors in all human females of child-bearing age, now roughly 8-80 years. Put a little LED in her earlobe. If it glows red then she's preggers and must be specially treated. Her intakes (foods, drugs, etc) must be limited, same as her activities. She is merely a baby-making machine. That's her role.

That's where anti-abortion leads. If you're not serious about monitoring ALL women then you're not serious about protecting embryos. You only want to control women.

I would take some disagreement with that last paragraph. The people attacking PP are just anti-abortion. Some of their motivation may be controlling women, but that is mostly incidental.

Their motivations are not the issue their actions were criminal and should be prosecuted, else we have no "Justice for All".

Incidental to their anti-abortion stance, of course.

Here we go again with your fuzzy innuendo. What incidental motivations? What incidental motivations are you claiming they have? Try not to mealy-mouth. Just once in your life.

yes, they have a good attorney and just entered the Clinton status of criminal activity
