Holidays declared for the sole purpose of sucking up to some constituency or another.

Today is one of those holidays, Columbus Day is the other. Neither of those gentlemen deserve a national holiday in their name.

Starting with Columbus, "Discoverer of America." How ludicrous, how can you 'discover' a place already occupied by other people? He never set foot on the North American continent and the honor of being the first European to set foot in the America's goes to some as yet unnamed Viking. Is there an "Olaf the Discoverer Day" somewhere in our future? If so, find a month that doesn't already have a national holiday, March perhaps, and that's where it will be planted.

As far as MLK is concerned, tireless worker to end segregation that he was, he hardly rises to the level of having a national holiday named in his honor. If there is any man of color that deserves that honor it would be Fredrick Douglas. Douglas was a better orator and a better writer. While MLK worked with a relatively large group of individuals, Douglas worked alone. The sole person of color that worked tirelessly to emancipate the slaves.

Overall I'm not in favor of having ANY national holiday named after a single individual. Americans do not recognize royalty or the titles thereof beyond matters of diplomatic protocol. We do not raise individuals to demigod like status either. Rename the holiday "Civil Rights Day," or something of the sort.

Neither of them can hold a candle to Christmas.

Got another pointless point to make?

How dare they create a national holiday in honor of someone who worked tirelessly for equality and peace.

It's not like he was the baby Jesus or something.

We need a national abortion day, to celebrate the millions of babies sacrificed on the altar of Democrat Liberalism.

Go to work to prove to the world your disdain for a holiday celebrating a coloured man. I trust that you also hate President's Day, as it also celebrates Roosevelt, Carter and Clinton - men unworthy of celebration.

MLK is important enough that you understand what he did, in a time when doing it proved to be signing his own death warrant.

Isn't that alone worthy of some recognition?

Nah, he was black. Fuck him.

i get it, you hate black people. we all know that, but whose ass are we collectively kissing with fucking columbus day?

It was the one other holiday he was willing to sacrifice for his rant.

If there had only been one more abortion many many decades ago in Florida, I'd go for the holiday idea.

I was going to ask if he would be willing to self abort if we managed to get a holiday for it.

The OP could bring race into a discussion of breakfast cereal.

The Eurocentric idea that America is a White Place, Founded by Good White People in 1492 when Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue and so fucking on.

Never mind that he was lost, didn't discover "America", didn't find gold, didn't do shite except enslave a few people and find potatoes.

The 1493 expedition when he brought troops, and war dogs is even more worthy of a grand holiday.

I quite enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving when we revise the idea that a Spaniard discovered America and change it to Religious Separatists who violently took the land from natives (but not through Jihad). Go English Settlers!

i still don't see how getting people to call you stupid because you said something really fucking stupid is a trap, but, then again, i'm not stupid so i might be at a disadvantage here.

the thoughts
the words
to stir
only...

i don't consider any of it as resolve...

some times,
a lead pipe is only a lead pipe

you're right. he should've gone with arbor day.

Another libs.-baiting thread, Ish?:)

He was also critical of Christopher Columbus - who was white - and colonialism. And I don't know much about MLK or Frederick Douglass, but they both looked black to me.

Ah, Query to the rescue in less than thirty minutes, well within bro response guidelines.

Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, NC, you mean. The Corps was imprinted on my brain forever.

Actually we both had toxemia and almost perished but God wouldn't let it happen.

Good one, actually.:)

Come to think of it, it was more of a defense mechanism than about Ish.
Some posters have accused me so many times of being a racist (when I'm anything But) that I've become allergic to labels that are too easily tossed around.

I don't think this thread is about you.
