I have known a couple of very good liars - they both had exceptional memories. I caught one of them out on a fairly important issue and she apologised, retracted her lie immediately, with complete insincerity.
However, the most interesting thing was the fact that several witnesses to the lie were more concerned about me pointing out her dishonesty than the lie itself. Many people don't like to be made to feel uncomfortable: thus preferring the lie to the exposure of it - which embarasses them.
