Pathological liars actually believe their stories, even the contradictory ones. Compulsive liars never think the truth is good enough, so always offer something else.

There is a difference.

i have to bite my lip to keep from laughing in their faces. i just love how they twist and turn in the wind in their mind. you can see it manifest itself physically.
if you are that uncomfortable, just tell the truth.

Compulsive Liar
Let's start with defining what is compulsive lying. A compulsive liar is a person who will lie, no matter what. It has become a habit with him to lie about everything and he has no control over it. The thing with people who suffer from compulsive lying disorder is that they lie because they find telling the truth very uncomfortable. So, to avoid themselves from this discomfort, they resort to lying.

Usually, it is seen that people develop this habit of lying compulsively, right in their childhood. They are generally raised in an atmosphere where lying is necessary. There is one trait common in all compulsive liars and that is - they have a very low self-esteem. So, in order to prove others that they are something, they resort to making stories and lying. Compulsive liars are more or less harmless. They lie out of habit, not to get anything out of it. Most compulsive liars know that they are lying, it's just that they are unable to do anything about it.

Pathological Liar
A pathological liar is someone who lies to get his way. They are manipulative, crafty and usually have a goal in mind when they lie. Pathological liars have no concern for the feelings of others, even of those people who are close to them.

Comparison
What separates a pathological liar from a compulsive liar is that pathological liars start believing their lies so much that they actually think that it is reality! That's why, they have no qualms lying about supposed "illnesses" or "incidents" or "adventures" they had experienced in their life. Some of the symptoms of a pathological liar are - they lie to gain something, they exaggerate things, they keep on changing their stories, they live in a false sense of "reality", if confronted they act defensive and never admit that they are liars and lastly, they hold no value for truth.

Compulsive liars have no motive for lying, they do it because they can not help it and also, because they find the truth to be very uncomfortable. On the other hand, pathological liars have an agenda, something that they want to achieve, that they get by lying, little caring about other people.

When it comes to pathological liars, it is seen that people who suffer from APD i.e. antisocial personality disorder and NPD i.e. Narcissistic Personality disorder, indulge in it. Compulsive liars, may or may not suffer from a mental disorder. Usually, it is seen that people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, resort to lying compulsively.

As for the treatment for both these disorders, psychotherapy, counseling and medication, a combination of any or all of these is used. The success of the treatment depends upon whether the person actually agrees that he is a "compulsive liar" or a "pathological liar". It is only when the person realizes that he has a psychological problem and he needs to overcome it, that treatment has any chances of being a success. Of course, family support goes a long way in overcoming this habit too, along with the treatment.

thanks for clearing that up.
most of them, of both kinds i've met, do seem to have had a bad childhood of some sort.

aj, ishmale, veteman, and busybody come to mind.

AJ and the Vettebigot are not pathological liars so much as reflexive liars, they lie out of habit as their "prime directive", if you will, is to protect The Narrative, i.e. whatever the Fox News/Republican party talking points of the day are.

Busybody is an attention whore. Period.

Ishmael, along with Amicus, are divorced from reality. I'm convinced they themselves don't understand half the things they are saying.

So, who's left?

If you strip out the delusional posters (Ish, Amicus) and the reflexive liars (AJ, Vetty, Koalabear, fuckwaffle), you're left with the saddest class of all, the pathological liars. I'd go with Garbage Can as the gold standard here. I'm convinced he actually believes the deceptions he promotes here. He seems fundamentally unable to recognize any viewpoints other than his own. Vetty and AJ choose not to do so...Garby can't help it.

I lived with one for almost a year and he just rolled out lies without a second thought, I think he actually believed the things he said no matter how unreal they were.

I read an interesting article on pathological lying or pseudologia fantastica.

Sort of like the billionaires on Lit.

I myself am a pathological liar. I'm psychologically incapable of telling the truth.

My daughter has a friend that is a compulsive liar. It's sad to see an 11 yr old feel that need to make up stories trying to outdo someone. No longer can we trust the simplest of stories unless confirmed by her mother.

A relative has pathological liar tendencies, and he DOES believe what he says. Describing scenarios like he was there and manipulating to get sympathy for his woes.

How about a narcissistic liar?

I suspect the problem is organic with some confabulation to disguise things. People with normal brains often make awful witnesses, so recollections arent set in stone with many people.

It's funny, but this place is the only place I have ever been called a liar.
Nowhere else.
Maybe it's because in other places (r/l, and certain sites like fb) there are links to people who can verify what I say?

Anyway, I know a couple of people who are pathological liars. I tend to keep my distance from them.

I really don't understand people who lie so much - life is a lot easier if you're just upfront.
I don't even like those little white lies people tell. Don't see the point.
