The political reaction to “slut” was opportunistic, of course, but it worked with a lot of women because — apparently, even in this age of sexual liberation and “slut pride” — women are still somehow deeply affected by charges of wanton and undiscriminating sexual behavior. This might even account for the importance of the contraceptive issue, because mandated contraceptive coverage may be seen as representing not just a modest monetary benefit, but also perhaps some sort of societal validation. I would have thought that a strong independent woman wouldn’t need a stamp of societal approval for her choices, but apparently I would have been wrong. I leave it to the evolutionary-psych folks to work out why the “slut” charge retains such power in liberated times.

Apparently, however, it is especially wrong to “slut-shame” even though lefties feel no compunction about shaming people regarding other personal choices — from not recycling to owning an SUV to, worst of all, being a Republican. As I say, there’s something more going on here. And if the “shaming” part of slut-shaming isn’t bad, because shaming is fine in other contexts, then it must be the “slut” part.

Self-Described Austin Sluts Protest Use of the Word ‘Slut’


They’re sluts and they’re proud, at least until someone else uses the term (and apologizes for it). From the “you can’t make this stuff up” files, otherwise known as the Slut Walk Austin web site. Scroll through their facebook widget on the right and you’ll come across this:


Sign the petition to ask ProFlowers to stop advertising with Rush Limbaugh, the misogynist and sexist who called a woman who publicly supported easy access to birth control a “slut” and “prostitute” and then said she should film her sexual encounters for him to watch.

Hopefully I won’t run afoul of the Austin Sluts by noting how dumb they are. I mean, they have used “slut” prominently and all over their Austin Slut Walk website. But they’re protesting its use in a radio show.

And they’re not self-aware enough to see a problem with all that.

Exit question: Can a guy be a “slut”?



I ask the question for two reasons. One, there are clearly two bearded guys leading the slut walk, banner in hand, and a third bearded guy in the background. Well, they’re either bearded guys or they’re the manliest women I’ve ever seen. What are bearded guys doing leading a slut walk?

Two days ago Jan Schakowsky released a statement condemning Rush Limbaugh for his remarks on Sandra Fluke:


“I strongly condemn the personal and vicious remarks made by Rush Limbaugh and conservative commentators this week about Sandra Fluke, a heroic young woman who is speaking out for her peers about their right to birth control. The behavior of those leaders from the right can only be classified as misogynistic, offensive, and a deliberate attempt to distract us from the legitimate argument about the consequences of limiting access to contraception. Rush Limbaugh repeatedly used sexually-charged, patently offensive, and obscene language to malign Sandra’s character.

I stand with Sandra. Sandra represents millions of women, and men, who recognize that women should have the right to determine what is best for them and that there should not be barriers or hurdles that women have to get past in order to get the health care services they need. Her willingness to step forward and be part of the public debate should be applauded – not vilified. Her voice – and the voices of millions of women across the country – will not be silenced by bullies who seek to slander them into silence.”

She was asked by a citizen journalist whether or not she would condemn one of President Obama's biggest donors who called Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, personally, exponentially worse. When presented with the opportunity, Conresswoman Schakowsky refused.



The conversation that ensured between the reporter and the congresswoman's staff is illuminating:


"Are you looking for a press statement?"

"Why would I go through that when I have the congresswoman right here?"

"The headline is going to be that toy refused to call Bill Maher's comments about Sarah Palin 'inappropriate beyond, the pale,' anything like that."

And that's exactly what happened. Does Congresswoman Schakowsky only find offense when she feels progressive women have been insulted? What of the war on conservative women?

Whilst it's pretty clear from the content of your posts that you aren't actually interested in intellectual discussion, but rather spewing bile constantly, I feel like someone should step in, so someone like you doesn't get to dictate the entire conversation here:

If you'd actually bothered to put in any research whatsoever, you'd know that the folks who run the various Slut Walks aren't using the word in the same way you are. You are using it as hate-filled invective that targets women specifically. For you, the term is sexist, because you are (I can only assume from what I've read here) an ass. The Slut Walk groups are trying to reclaim the word and remove its power as a derogatory term, so that people like you don't get to define it anymore. To them (to us, for I am certainly a slut myself, and a guy, for your information) the word is applicable to sexually free individuals who operate under the idea that sex is fun, so long as nobody gets hurt. Or, hell, polyamorists like myself and my lovers. Also, if you'd bothered to do any kind of reading on the issue at all, you'd see that this is not the only element of the discussion that these people are involved in: mainly, they are fighting to improve a culture of victim blaming about sexual assault, so that a woman cannot be claimed to be "asking for it," just because she dresses or acts in certain, liberated ways.

When the Austin Slut Walk group uses the term, they are using it in an attempt to change the definition, to empower women and sex-positive people everywhere. When Rush Limbaugh used it, it was a vile, hate-filled thing used merely as an insult and a put-down because he disagreed with someone else's viewpoint. Somehow I doubt this will even get across to you, based purely on the diatribe you've given so far, but sometimes I just feel like I need to speak out, even if I'm just talking to myself.
