....against obese people because they have no excuse - no glands, no genes, just greed and laziness. Say what you will, life-style has a lot to do with it, hours lounging in front of the TV with bowls of carbs and fast food crap.

Village on a Diet proved that years of bad habits can be broken and replaced by healthy ones.

I totally agree when I am stuck in the middle seat between two of them.
I'm always afraid during turbulence that they'll come loose and I'll get crushed - or the air bags will come down and they will suck all my air before I have a chance.
On those flights, if possible, I spend a lot of time in the aisle and in the restroom.

Airlines should hand out complimentary 40-yr-old Oban for such occasions. ;)

Lifestyle has everything to do with it. Except for the weight at birth, every ounce of the human body came in through the mouth. There were no obese hunter gathers.

One of the problems is "lifestyle" seems like a matter of choice. Some of it is , but a large part is in our nature. The human body evolved in an environment which required a lot of labor to find enough food to maintain health. We instinctively go for the most food for the least work.

Take away the manual labor and provide low effort food and we will take that deal every time. It's in our nature.

And another thing...I hate it that they sweat.

Nice sweat from skinny people engaged in real (and sometimes very exciting activities !) is nice.

Awful sweat from obese people who are sweating just because they are breathing is to be avoided at all cost.

ummm yes and no.

there is increasing clinical evidence that children who had obese mothers or whose mothers stuffed themselves in pregnancy have a disproportionate chance of obesity as adults.

Just one more while I'm on a roll...

If I have to pay $100 because one piece of my luggage is 6 pounds over, why don't they have to pay for the gazillion pounds of obesity that they bring onto the plane?

Tickets should be discounted if you are of normal weight. If not, you should be charged a premium.

Bronzeage is totally correct. If you have a sedentary job, and choose to consume more calories in a day than you can burn, you can only blame yourself.
Your parents may have had a small influence in terms of how they taught you to eat, but with all the information available now it's kind of like saying you smoke because your parents did.

Some obese have imbalances in the brain, and these obese people get a pass from me. The other obese, ya know the ones, the ones that walk several times per day up to the fast food counter, well, they get no pass.

Lazy is what they are. Their Doctor tells them to lose weight, and they fuse. What a shame.

They choose fast food over fresh produce. and if anyone says "fast food is cheaper," I am going to explode.

You understand that on an ^ aircraft we are stuck sitting beside them. Any other time we can just get up and walk away if they bother us.

Actually, we could buy a seat on the next plane, but not many of us have the schedule flexibility to do that.

you are only right to an extent, but there ARE those with reasons not - NOT - excuses for their weight. Bronze has the right of it; most of it is about conditioning and then choice. for the majority of those overweight, myself included, more regulation of intake (not necessarily less, more regularity, not eating late or large single meals) would sort out their issues. when i am eating properly, i eat more food per day than when i don't, but it means the 3-meals per day thing and lots of water and not eating after 7 in the evening. too many of us in this modern age find ourselves going past midday without eating, then grab something high-calorie and quick, then eat a big or calorific meal well past 7 o'clock at night. it goes completely against the way our bodies function best. activity isn't necessarily part of the weight issues either, Tess. it is for some, not others. i get up at 6.15 and rarely sit down at all before 7ish at night. i am lifting, walking, moving all the time. it feels nice to sit down at night and eat something very yummy and, maybe, have one glass of beer. i intend to try and regulate my eating times/fluid intake better now as i don't want to suffer too many joint problems as i get even older.

having said that, to be prejudiced against someone because of their weight rather than the person they are seems small-minded, Tess. because their appearance, their very existence offends you... all about how they 'look'? we can choose to change our accents to whatever's deemed more 'successful' at the time but most (thank goodness) do not - it's not the 60's and the queen's english. still, at least you realise it IS a prejudice - and prejudices are notoriously irrational.

So, cb, you would welcome one on either side of you on a your next trans-Atlantic flight?

Next they should have choices of 1) window 2) aisle 3) fat person beside you

it honestly depends on how obese we're talking. 30+ stone? no, i'd not be keen. since i don't fly, it's not an issue i have to deal with. having said that, i'd sooner be sat next to a decent, obese person than a nasty, slender one who judges people by their weight above all else. appearances are only a part of what we are; it's not an instant indicator of who we are.

Yessss, handed out by hunky male attendents. I ended up wedged between the window and an - at least - 400lb man. He spent most of the flight from Heathrow to De Gaulle digging McDonalds out of his carry-on, stuffing his face and belching loudly - and no, he wasn't French, he was from Baltimore.

The Man from Baltimore smelled like he hadn't bathed for a week. When he stood up I nearly passed out it was so bad.

It's a fact that fat people are passed over for jobs or promotion. Clothes are often more expensive for fatties. Why not add to the price of ther fries, milk shakes, poutine, KFC? Greasy guzzlers.

ok, what about the slim, tall, good-looking guy with appalling halitosis or BO? what about the cute young woman with wind problems or the extremely aggravating voice/laugh?

most people have something about them any one of us can find irritating if we allow it.

I am a big believer of personal responsibility so if you eat too much and don't excercise enough you will probably become overweight.

Most of the time if you are an overweight parent then your child is probably going to be the same way. They eat what you eat or they follow the example you set when it comes to eating habits.

I think some of our society has become dependent/ or are lazy and cook pre packaged food that is full of chemicals and it is crap. Then you get the people who don't have cooking skills so they follow the instructions on a packet and don't even read the nutritional value let alone fat and sugar content.

Eating healthy is more expensive unless you are growing your own fruit and vegies or have access to cheap fruit and vegies.

Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have shown us how cheap and easy growing your own food can be.

I belong to a parenting board where it is constantly mentioned that their children won't eat vegies. "I don't want to force them to eat vegies or I think I'm being mean buy insisting they eat their vegies" annoys me. It didn't harm me in any way that I had to eat my vegies. I'm not scarred for life or traumatised because I had to eat vegies I didn't like.

My children didn't have a choice. "Eat what you're given or go without." Or I camoflagued their vegies in spaghetti bolognese, shepherds pie etc.

I grew vegies in our garden and encouraged the children from a young age to sow their own vegies, watch them grow, harvest and cook them. They thought it was pretty cool cooking and eating something they grew and nurtured from a seed.

On the other hand I see most junk food and fizzy drinks are cheaper than healthy food. I see people on a low income buying cheap food (like 2 minute noodles, fizzy, potato chips etc) because it's cheap and it fulls them up.

Of course it's their choice what they eat. No one can change their eating habits except for them.

I understand most families have both parents working and their lives are so much busier juggling work, homework, after school activities and familiy time.

But Hugh and Jamie have shown cooking a quick, healthy family meal can be affordable and take up very little time using a crock pot or tried and proven methods they use.

If I was in charge of a government I would take GST off food 'essentials' like fruit, vegies, rice and meat. You can't cure obesity but hopefully most people would eat healthier if they could afford to.

I do believe some people have OCD. (Obsessive compulsive disorder) Or have food issues where they stuff themselves to try and fill a void they think they have with food.

Sometimes it's a health problem. As in their thyroid isn't working properly.

I've met/seen and continue to meet/see a lot of smelly, skunky, grungy-assed skinny people. Especially these days, where being skinny is a fashion statement and some skinny people think that gives them an automatic pass on their hygiene and wearing stupid, ill-fitting expensive clothes they think are cute because someone else in a magazine told them they were. Or no underwear because their pelvis bones are supposed to be attractive. And then they think that just because they're skinny it means they're healthy and that they can eat whatever junk they want all in the name of a "fast metabolism." Almost every week in this city I see some drunk-assed mofos throwing up their guts/coughing up a lung out in the middle of the street or hugging a tree outside a bar/lounge/club/restaurant and it's most often a skinny person being held up by their more fuller-figured friend.

We can continue the anecdotal knee-jerk haterade festival on both sides of the fence as long as you like, Tess. It doesn't make either of us "right."
