Okay so my boss DOES want to get into the Property and Casualty business, which puts me into conflict of interest because of my wife's business where I'm a partner. He's already got an insurance guy starting work first of July.
I anticipated this a while back and I knew my second in charge was a dickhead toward his employees, and he wanted to cancel the tech school I helped establish. So I flatly eliminated his position and said we didn't need a manager between the shift supervisors, floor manager and the tech services manager (me). Too many damned layers. Boss loved it. Showed the idiot the door and shoved him out into that cold hard economy face-first, with a wave and a smile. Of course potentially it meant more work for me but I feared he was going to call me in soon and say exactly what he said today.
So as of sometime in July I'm out, and working with my wife, and one of the managers I mentored is now training for my job. No asshole is taking my spot.
On one hand that's almost half our income out the window - on the other hand I'm a partner in our insurance business and we can just bring in more customers, and 100% of all the money I've earned for almost 2 years has gone right into the bank and stayed untouched. That's a lotta interest accruing monthly.
Still, that desert island will have to go on layaway.
Oh wait, what desert island? Sillyme. I just want a bigger home theater. IMAX sized. And I can't get that no matter how much cash I have.
