Last night I got a nasty trojan that inserted itself as an antivirus program and kept popping up warnings, fictitious scans and wanted me to buy it.
AVG didn't get it. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Super-antispyware. Poof. Gone.
To turn off AVG, right click on the icon in the taskbar and click exit.

My son and a business colleague both picked up the same bug the other day. It was a nasty little bugger but I took the occasion to wipe the lad's hard drive clean and reinstall his OS and applications. Jomar: the malwarebytes worked nicely and picked up 15 instances.
jomar: superantispyware ran for 4 hours and found a couple things, but seemed to get gummed up, and when i halted, the notice of what was found to that point, disappeared.

Avast is solid. Been running it for five or so years without any problem. Requires that you register an email adress with them, but they don't use it for anything, it seems.txrad: i'm looking into AVAST; it sounds good in its reviews.
