i have 8.0. i suspect there may be a virus missed. how do i turn off avg without uninstalling. any suggestions for a complementary/supplementary scan (freeware).

thanks.

:rose:

I've never had any problem with Spyware Search & Destroy. Find it here and others too.

If you double click the tray icon for AVG, it will give you a 'dashboard' to work through.

Last night I got a nasty trojan that inserted itself as an antivirus program and kept popping up warnings, fictitious scans and wanted me to buy it.

AVG didn't get it. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Super-antispyware. Poof. Gone.

My son and a business colleague both picked up the same bug the other day. It was a nasty little bugger but I took the occasion to wipe the lad's hard drive clean and reinstall his OS and applications. Of course I may have accidentally forgotten to save all his porn bookmarks but, you know, mistakes happen. :D

I'm not even running any anti-virus or anti-malware programs for the last few years. No problems (yet) either :D

Ha! Not to worry. As he learned at his father's knee, he backed up to a flash drive. :)

The best thing you can do with AVG is to dump it and load the free version of Avast.

AVG has always been hit or miss on it's incoming scans.

thanks, guys!

Jomar: the malwarebytes worked nicely and picked up 15 instances.

crimson: i can't get housecalls to work in its NON java version. can't find the Active X kernel

jomar: superantispyware ran for 4 hours and found a couple things, but seemed to get gummed up, and when i halted, the notice of what was found to that point, disappeared.

txrad: i'm looking into AVAST; it sounds good in its reviews.

Four hours? Maybe reinstall and see if it's worth it? I had googled the bug I got and the forums recommended those.

My standard programs are AVG (free version), Spybot, and Adaware. But there's a lot out there. You might want to browse PC Pitstop. My brother-in-law loves it.

I started using Spybot search and destroy when I contracted a pretty tough to get rid of virus last year (certainly was NOT from watching porn! ;) ). That has been a pretty good addition to AVG, which I also still use. Between the two I haven't had any issues in a long long while.

Avast is solid. Been running it for five or so years without any problem. Requires that you register an email adress with them, but they don't use it for anything, it seems.

Why don't you have any?

Antivirus? Because I never got infected by anything that could get cleaned off by a scan. It always required something more in depth, like a format.

Antimalware? Because I couldn't get a free download to work so I gave up and didn't ever try again
