A few weeks ago, Forbes released a list of the top five money-making actresses (or female actors, if you prefer) in 2007: They are:

Cameron Diaz
Keira Knightley
Jennifer Anniston
Reese Witherspoon
Gweyneth Paltrow

Whiile they are all attractive and first-rate performers, it occured to me that none of them would be described as: stacked or built like a brick shit-house. It makes one wonder if the fixation on female breasts, especially big ones, is becoming passe' in our culture?

The signals are mixed, naturally. Knightley just objected to having her petite bosom computer enhanced for, Pirates OTC 4. And slender, Oscar wiinning beauty Charlize Theron claims her lack of clevage has cost her roles.

The change to slimmer more athletic figures being the body-type of choice began back in the '70's. Based on movie box-office revenues, the look would now seem to be the rule, not the exception.

If so, then how should writers, especially of erotica/porn, deal with this change? Just FWIW, I've noticed that more and more of my female protags have small breasts, but that may just be me.

What about you? Any thoughts?

I myself prefer small to medium breasts, thus in my stories I have almost gone out of my way not to describe breast size. In most cases. I leave it to the imagination of the reader as to how big or small the breast they are reading about.

Being an ass man all the way . . . :D

Perhaps smaller breasts are reminiscent of innocence and vulnerability? And larger ones are associated with silicone-filled strippers?

Actually, I think it's possible to over-think the breast situation. You still see big ones in commercials, so one would think that fact would balance out the five small-breasted money-making actresses mentioned earlier.

When it comes to movies, ideally, we would be judging them on the merits of the story told, not on the size of the breasts telling the story. If Selma Hyek had made a bit more money lately, she would have skewed the list towards bigger.

Personally, I prefer them smallish, perhaps because of the innocence issue. Plus, they age better.

Maybe - and I know this is a wild idea, but bear with me here - they were the top money-making actresses because of how well they can . . . ACT!

Sorry. When do we get the list correlating the list of top money-making actors with their estimated penis sizes?

(claps hands)

Those women being at the top of their game has zilch to do with their breasts. I mean, it's definitely a crying shame that Sofia Vergara never got the Best Supporting Oscar she so rightfully deserved in Chasing Papi, but...she didn't ask to be borned with those huge milk farms, now did she?

It's all about how well they can act. if you want big boobs look at porn and all the fake boobs. it seems the women starte out with smaller breats and the longer they stay in it the larger their brest seem to get.

I'm sorry if anyone got the impression I was decrying the body shape of those on the list or implying that some on the list made it due to cleavage and sex appeal instead of skill and charisma.

My questions were: Does the list reflect a change in the public's preference when it comes to body type, and, if so, how should erotic/porn writers respond, if at all?

Well, Angelina Jolie would be on the list if she'd made a movie in 2007 that didn't suck. And she is definitely known for her rack.

I think the more appropriate correlation isn't to breast size so much as to slenderness. They have builds more like models (some of them were models) than the average woman. I have read a number of articles about actresses being told to lose 20 lbs or 15 lbs for a role. Not because they were fat, but because they weren't skinny.

Anyway, my point being slender women tend to be slender on top as well. So Hollywood isn't going after small breasted women, it's going after skinny women and accepting the lack of breast size.

Oh... Well, don't confuse Hollywood for porn.

Also, I don't know about your stories, but when I write I don't make a big deal about the size of the woman's breasts, just like I don't bring up the size of the guy's penis. Of course, I'm a less is more writer in that regard. Also, I write what I like more than trying to please the audience.

When sizes are not provided in a story I'm reading, I fill in my wife's breasts and my own penis.

And I claim that this obsession with slenderness is driven by men who don't like women, anyway, and really want them to look like the twelve year old boys that they prefer.

Ummm so the fact that I have been well-endowed by mother nature.....and you being an ass man....you wouldn't even look?

But of course! Y'know, you're being really coy, tonight, Tricia. And . . . I like it!

After all, a properly zaftig woman is well balanced all over. ;)

Isn't this a contradiction? If they preferred twelve year old boys, they wouldn't like women, would they?

I still think it comes back to the innocence/vulnerability angle. A hefty woman would be seen as being able to watch out for herself, while a skinny one would be seen as vulnerable, and therefore, more dependent on a male for protection. I don't see how a twelve year old boy fits into this picture.

Hollywood is about money. Even gay directors know that and are well aware that the majority of the buying public is straight. Therefore, there need to be women in the movies. However, their own taste doesn't run that way so they try to get as close to the twelve year old as possible while still having actresses. No, there is no contradiction.

But not all twelve-year-old boys are slender...

...not that I have, uhh...experience with twelve-year-old boys, mind you...*koff koff*

I see - so your earlier statement about men preferring skinny women because they look like twelve year old boys was not in reference to the general public, but limited to the tastes of certain gay Hollywood directors? That makes sense to me.
