I may be forced to post another ‘best’ story at this rate. Though it would be better if a different author could get us back on track.

My heroFairytale of New York
Category: SF&F
Year published: 2023
Words: 1.8k
Basic premise: Every Christmas Eve, a troll forces himself out of his tunnels to search for his lost love.
Themes: It's about introversion, how addictive it can be, and how hard it is on the people in your life.
Motivation: I wrote it after Shane McGowan died, as a tribute to him and Kirsty McColl. It was supposed to be a fluffy fairy tale, with fae creatures inhabiting New York's Central Park. Within a few lines it had taken a dark turn, and I found myself exploring my severe introversion and trying to express it.
Why is it your best story: Perhaps not my best, but for a short piece it packs a punch. As @Devinter said in the WIWAW thread linked below, "I'd go into a deeper, proper review - but then I'd have to read the story again for a fourth time, and I don't know if I can handle that today." Few other stories of mine have as much of me in them, and this one ended up as a tribute to my wife, and her patience in putting up with me.
Anything else we should know about it: This story was the basis for the very first WIWAW.
My heroine (note final ‘e’ though @PennyThompson is kinda addictive).I'm not too proud to post twice, since Emily said we could
Cosplay Euphoria
Category: Crossdressing
Year published: 2025
Words: 7,600
Basic premise: A couple of awkward dorks decide to dress in cosplay for ComicCon, and end up in some unexpectedly sexual situations.
Themes: Costume fantasy, gender play, light exhibitionism, going outside of your comfort zone
Motivation: The story I wrote before this one, Accessibility Compliance, got a really positive response and I fell in love with the characters. The Geek Pride writing challenge was coming up and I wanted to participate in that, and the awkward horny nerdiness of Scout and Jeremy seemed like a natural fit!
Why is it your best story: I'm proud of the way I integrated some fun nerdy references, obvious ones like Star Wars, and less obvious ones like Disney's A Goofy Movie as a metaphor for the suburban Black experience. I defiantly chose to spend way too much time on costume descriptions, which some people dislike but in this context I felt that I needed to go deep with it! I'm especially proud and protective of the character of Scout, and they seem to have struck a chord with some readers which makes me really happyPeople also liked the character of Rosa waaay more than I was expecting...
Anything else we should know about it: A lot of Scout's feelings and anxieties are my feelings and anxieties, writing this (and Accessibility Compliance, and Vocational Awe) were somewhat therapeutic for me! I've never cosplayed myself, but I have cosplay friends who unknowingly gave me a lot of inspiration, inshallah they will never know![]()

@iwatchus and @MelissaBaby thank you both for your kind comments on my story.
I’m working on it, EM, but each time I fill out half the questions, I circle back to another story…’No, wait, that one’s better’ and I have to start all over again.
Kinda did that myself…Wanna know a secret?
The one I picked is NOT by "best story." I've got several "best stories." The one I picked got posted because it was the one where I could most easily answer Em's "theme" question.
Go for it!
To add to this, thank you to @iwatchus for the amazingly encouraging comment on Through the Watching Glass@iwatchus and @MelissaBaby thank you both for your kind comments on my story.
