Tariffs announced on Canada, China, & Mexico goods

Canada didn't turn off the electricity today, but they did slap a 25% punitive tariff on electricity exported to the United States. What a shame, I was looking forward to seeing the folks in Maine squealing in the dark. The way I look at it, they sent Susan Collins back to the Senate, it's way past time they learned that their actions have some very real consequences.
Under NERC, we would have to give notice, and a reason to open the disconnect. Otherwise, like back in 2003 the US power companies would have a right to sue for damages under the NAFTA agreement. (They didn't sue, because the fault occurred in a switching station in Ohio). While I don't know for sure, I'm certain that clause stayed in after Trump renegotiated.

However, it is a real threat, one Trump should weight very carefully, the same applies to shutting off the Oil,and any MAGA who thinks that is no big deal, should ask themselves why Trump wants the Keystone XL pipeline restarted.....

Doug said this before.

There is another company Xplornet, which like Starlink, uses satellites. I had it before switching to Starlink. We are in the process of switching back.
musk is absolutely out to monopolise as many industries as he can, worldwide. A man like him, well, no-one, actually, should have that much control, that much power.

NAFTA was replaced by something (USMCA?) in 2020, but i get your point.

I wonder if Carrot Caligula's unilateral tariffs on Canada constitute a treaty abrogation? I honestly don't know.

Perhaps when Lance sobers up he can enlighten us, he knows all sorts of stuff about Canadian trade policy

Yeah, but there’s nothing to do about it:

The short answers:

  • Trump is sidestepping the deal on "security" grounds.
  • Canada and Mexico can challenge Trump in court, but that could take years.
  • The deal is up for review next year anyway, so this could be a preview of things to come.

Under CUSMA ( our acronym but I still use NAFTA) these tariffs are illegal. However they were also illegal when Trump used them in 2018. Not much of a mechanism short of the WTO to resolve this.

The LCBO just pulled all American liquor from their shelves, and to give you an idea of the scale. The LCBO is considered the largest buy of American Liquor in the world. It was the counter tariff on Kentucky booze that ended the tariff war last time around.

So we will have another 25% on Canada and Mexico after both retaliated.

Fucking chicken say's he'll pull them tomorrow. The stock market isn't afraid to speak truth to power...

I want to leave ours on for another 30 days.
it's damned chaos!

I actually feel sorry for the poor bastards in manufacturing and the import/export trade whose heads must be turning like Linda Blair's on a bad night trying to keep up with the proposed changes and what they entail for their businesses!

If you want your ears to bleed, listen to Maria Bartiromo's unhinged squealing after the field reporter throws the feed back to her. She is seething that the Dodge dealer was pissy 'yeah building auto plants in the USA is fine and dandy, but those take years to build and I gotta find a way to sell muh RAM trucks NOW!'

First Maria spluttered helplessly trying to find the right word to describe the Dodge dealer, she called him a 'manufacturer' then completely lost her composure because she couldn't figure out the right word to use....finally tapping her earpiece and saying 'distributor!' triumphantly....then 'AND WHY AREN'T WE ADDRESSING THE REAL QUESTION, WHY CANT DODGE SELL THEIR RAM TRUCKS IN EUROPE??????"

Well for one thing, Maria, gasoline in France is $6.74 per gallon and RAM trucks get shitty mpg. Not to mention they're very wide and would have difficulty navigating narrow European streets.

It's a dumb point made by poorly educated people. Ford do sell vehicles in Europe. Because the standards of vehicle safety are far higher in Europe, they manufacture models for the European market. So you won't see Cybertrucks in the UK because they are illegal. But there are plenty of Teslas and Fords to be seen. They have much better standards of fuel economy, handling, etc than the US cars.

GM have always struggled to make European cars and ended up buying up other brands and even re-badging them. Daewoo cars were rebranded as Chevrolet for a while. GM Europe has now been sold to Group PSA, so Vauxhalls & Opels etc. which used to be independent, then were GM, are now part of Group PSA but most consumers are unaware of that.

It's possible to buy a Cadillac, but as cars are taxed according to emissions they are stupidly expensive to run.

The main reason that US car manufacturers don't sell cars abroad is that they don't bother.

More back peddling from the Trump administration....like what the fuck did Trump expect? We'd roll over and play dead?

"The source told CBC News that Lutnick was clearly trying to get Canadians to de-escalate, as Canada implements counter-tariffs and Ford has made dramatic threats, including putting an export tax on electricity."

Trump really has no understanding of interconnected world markets as he gleefully destroys stability that was achieved through decades of trade agreements. Soon the American dollar will plunge rapidly in value, and collapse America's relative economic strength in the world.

The MAGA cult is economic suicide for the middle and low income fools who voted for a second term of Trump chaos. They depend upon supply chains that are being destroyed as we speak.

Look at photos of the bread lines in 1929. His first two months are just a hint of the chaos to come.

A reading from after Justin and the idiot spoke:

"Lutnick said the president may land "somewhere in the middle" because Mexico and Canada are "trying their best," suggesting the U.S. tariff rate may be lower than the current 25 per cent.

Canada doesn't want any tariffs at all and will push for a full removal to restore free trade, Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said.

In an interview with CBC's The National late Tuesday night, LeBlanc said Canada is "not interested in some sort of reduction of the tariffs. We want the free trade agreement with the United States and Mexico respected."

He said Canadians are rightfully angry, frustrated and insulted by Trump's abusive trade actions, and that means the government won't settle for half measures.

"We're not interested in meeting in the middle," LeBlanc said in an interview with CBC Radio's The Current Wednesday morning.

Canada has the right idea. Sadly, they are facing someone who feels laws 'n treaties are little more than 'advisory in nature'.

It was good to see the Supreme Court bitchslap Don Cheetolini this morning about USAID payments, but a bit scary that the vote was a scant 5-4.

"Justice' Barrett seems to be having some sort of crisis of confidence of late. She's been all over the map with her recent decisions.

The Clown Show Administration is trying to placate Wall Street by saying tariffs will be rescinded, while leaving the tariffs in place.

The announced one month tariff pause for US automakers doesn’t change anything.

When investors and hedge fund operators realize they’re being lied to, they are going to have an extremely adverse reaction.

I remember years ago Mexico repeatedly assured money traders they would not devalue the peso. Then they devalued the peso. The foreign exchange traders proceeded to crush the peso into worthlessness and sink the entire Mexican economy, which had been growing rapidly. Don’t mess with Wall Street.
