So your position is that 300% tariffs imposed on the US is totally fine, but Trump using tariffs as a negotiation tactic or imposing 25% tariffs is 'bad'.
Gotcha.![]()
Oz does not fear much from Trump tariffs on us because the USA has a large trade surplus with us and our average tariff on stuff from the US is 2%. However, Trump's tariffs on China will damage us because it will reduce demand for raw materials exported from Oz to China. We are in the unusual position of having a large trade surplus with China.
The worst result for us is that Trump will whack us with a big Tariff just because he can. Both he first time round, and Bush junior tried this, but were eventually talked out of it. But "Stupid Games." are always possible.
It's going to be fun when countries start moving their money away from Wall Street. This graphic shows the market abandoning American positions and seeking a "safe harbor" in European stocks and currencies today.
Pay special attention to the VIX index....that's the key indicator of American stock market volatility. It usually trends between 20 (safe stable market) and 30 (Trump declares martial law). It has been suspiciously very low the first month of the Trump second reich, probably indicating that stock market traders felt Trump would yammer his usual bullshit threats but not actually DO anything. The Ukraine debacle and increased scrutiny of Musk's habitual missteps, it appears the market is finally waking up to the idea that 'this is not okay'.....a 15% DAILY rise in the VIX index to 22% today is a serious harbinger of 'there's a bad moon on the rise'.

As I said earlier though, here on Lit we'll at least have TastySuckToy to succor us.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Monday that he would block energy exports to the United States "with a smile" if U.S. President Donald Trump moved ahead with plans for a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods.
BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Tuesday suspended the soybean import qualifications from three U.S exporters and halted the imports of U.S. lumber, increasing its retaliatory pressure against U.S. tariffs in the start of an all-out trade war.
The suspension comes just hours after China imposed import levies covering $21 billion worth of American agricultural and food products.
Someone pointed out something I had not considered last night;Oz does not fear much from Trump tariffs on us because the USA has a large trade surplus with us and our average tariff on stuff from the US is 2%. Trump has made tariffs a central part of his economic policy and said he plans to create an “External Revenue Service” to oversee the duties. The name reflects his oft-repeated and inaccurate claim that tariffs are paid by foreign countries.
silver lining: the standard of education's improvedIn fact, they’re a tax paid by American companies, with the costs passed on to consumers.
And given the short supply chains for fresh produce, buyers will see those price increases almost immediately, Cornell said. A couple of months ago, only about 20 percent of America understood what a tariff was, but now it’s closer to 50 percent, he said.
Best Buy
Similarly, Best Buy, heavily reliant on electronic imports, anticipates price adjustments. As reported by CNBC, CEO Corie Barry commented on an earnings call that "the consumer electronic supply chain is highly global, technical and complex," and that price increases due to the new tariffs are "highly likely" for consumers in the U.S.
Walmart
In November, Walmart also signaled a potential for price increases. CFO John David Rainey told CNBC, "We never want to raise prices... Our model is everyday low prices. But there probably will be cases where prices will go up."
The Canadian province paused the contract cancellation after Trump agreed to postpone his tariffs for 30 days. But with the US imposing tariffs on Canada (and Mexico) today, Ford decided to terminate the deal, telling the public: "It’s done, it’s gone."
“We won’t award contracts to people who enable and encourage economic attacks on our province and our country,” the Premier said, alluding to SpaceX CEO and Trump ally Elon Musk.
SpaceX will lose about $100 million CAD (US$68.9 million) from the deal, which was first announced in November. However, it also means that 15,000 underserved homes and businesses in rural and remote communities will not get subsidized satellite internet access.

"We're ripping up Ontario’s contract with Starlink,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the losses won't be that big a drop in the musk ocean and some rural Canadians will not get the internet they need. Hopefully there's another plan in place to get it to them.
I'd like to agree but given how much his wealth has grown since trump took office—$170B—I'm not sure he'll be that concerned. Fuck the people that work for the companies he owns, he's doing just fine. However, in late February 2025 Carlos Slim of Mexico cancelled a $22B contract with Starlink!
That’ll give Elon a sore ass!

"We're ripping up Ontario’s contract with Starlink,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a press conference on Tuesday.
There is another company Xplornet, which like Starlink, uses satellites. I had it before switching to Starlink. We are in the process of switching back.

Canada didn't turn off the electricity today, but they did slap a 25% punitive tariff on electricity exported to the United States. What a shame, I was looking forward to seeing the folks in Maine squealing in the dark. The way I look at it, they sent Susan Collins back to the Senate, it's way past time they learned that their actions have some very real consequences.
