RIP Jimmy Carter

Anybody know how Monica feels about his passing?

I will light a bowl in his honor. R.I.P. Mr. President. Few of us make it to 100. Fewer still make it to become President.

It makes me laugh that the lead is always "he was a bad President" and then followed up with respect and admiration for the man.

The right can't help themselves.
He was primaried by Teddy. He rubbed his own party the wrong way, for some good reasons mind you, but Washington doesn’t like outsiders, as evidenced by Trump. President Carter tried to bring his Georgia Good Ol’ Boys and shake up the Swamp. The Swamp flexed its muscle and made him a one-termer….

That can't be it -- why would they have preferred Reagan? He was just as much an outsider.

Yep...not my focus.

The right puts their consideration of his presidency first and that was what I called out

Not saying I am against that, but they like to disguise it with the backend of "respect"

I shouldn’t be so hard on the young’ns…

Carter faced headwinds from the get go. He didn’t really have a mandate as he had a modest win over Ford. Took over during the highest inflation due the Arab embargo’s in the early 70’s. Add in the above inter-party scuffles, Afghanistan situation, Iranian Hostage crisis, Three Mile Island at home, and the malaise that stagflation and a perceived weakness internationally, the country was ripe for a true leader.

As to the nattering nabobs of negativity above…I’ll say this. President Carter was the worst president of my lifetime. As a president, not as a man. Luckily for him, every democrat since has lowered the bar. Biden now holds the mantle of worst president, not only of my lifetime but ever.

You have to be the most clueless moron on this forum. Bar none.

Shhhh....you're getting worked up. If you don't calm down, the nursing home will take away your computer center privileges - and then you won't be able to publish any more of your shitty poetry. ☹️

I've read this one and what you're describing ain't in it.
OK…maybe you’re a bigger moron than Rory…

A wiki page? Seriously? What part of Iranian hostage crisis do you not understand? I know the better part of you was probably running down your mother’s leg back then, but I can tell you, all of what I posted had a hand in collectively ending his presidency.

As usual, ignore history at your peril.

Oh…do I have secret admirer? I’m collecting quite a dubious fan base. Thanks for reading hun😘

No, I've read the whole doorstopper book, Perlstein's Reaganland, which covers the whole period of Carter's presidency in quite incredible depth, and there's nothing in it about Washington insiders being against him.

One interesting thing from that book: The hostage crisis was planned by nobody, it just kinda . . . happened. There were several factions active in Tehran -- when one of them suddenly found itself in possession of the American embassy, Khomeini just had to deal with that. As Perlstein describes it, it was not even a matter of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing -- the fingers were not in communication.

Carter's state funeral will be January 9.

Memorial service

Planning for Carter's death had begun several years prior, according to The New York Times, the plan goes as follows: Carter will be taken by motorcade to Atlanta where he will arrive at the Georgia State Capitol and lie in repose at the Carter Center for a day and a half. He will lie in state at the United States Capitol for an additional day and a half before a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral. Carter will be interred at his home in Plains, Georgia.[21]

State funeral

A state funeral is set to be held for Carter on January 9, 2025.[22] President Biden also declared January 9 to be a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.[23] Biden is expected to deliver Carter's eulogy after disclosing that he had been asked to do so.[24]

Jay Nordlinger wrote in “Carterpalooza,” “No one quite realizes just how passionately anti-Israel Carter is. William Safire has reported that Cyrus Vance acknowledged that, if he had had a second term, Carter would have sold Israel down the river. In the 1990s, Carter became quite close to Yasser Arafat. After the Gulf War, Saudi Arabia was mad at Arafat, because the PLO chief had sided with Saddam Hussein. So Arafat asked Carter to fly to Riyadh to smooth things over with the princes and restore Saudi funding to him — which Carter did…In The Unfinished Presidency, [Douglas] Brinkley writes, ‘There was no world leader Jimmy Carter was more eager to know than Yasir Arafat.’”

I didn't really know much about Carter, being just a clueless Brit teenager when he served his presidential term. All I really got was that he was the peanut guy. By the time Reagan got in I was a bit wised up politically and aware things had changed.

But everything I know about what he did since suggests to me he was a very genuine, kind human driven by his faith to do the most good in the world he could. Although I'm a devout agnostic, I can admire the sense of mission and duty that a genuine Christian like Carter had, and be appalled at the cynical way a certain successor uses the Bible and its followers as an emotive electoral trick while not even remotely following its message or performing its works.
