I don't think they used iron nails is their ships, because the salt water would make them rust very quickly. They used "trunnels", tree nails. Dowel sticks, basically. The water would make them swell up and fit tighter than when they went in.

AAAaaaand I attached the wrong image. Now to see If I can figure out how to fix that....

Actually they started using iron in the ships back in the 1400's. Of course those iron items were used to hold down the decking not to hold the sides of the ship on. So, the ship wouldn't fall apart, but the decking wouldn't be held down any more.
