This is what the most common Similar Stories were for story published from 8/30 to 10/3, 28 days after they were published

* I think it's interesting that there are categories that are self-contained, such as I/T and Lesbian Sex, that the top similar stories are all within the category and they don't appear on any other category. Then you have categories like Anal where two of the top four stories are from the Mature category. That tells me that a lot of Anal readers also read Mature stories. Similarly, NonHuman and SF&F seem to share a lot of their readers.
* If I was a reader of a particular category, I'd look through the list of top Similar Stories for that category from potential reading material as those are stories that people are favoriting. For I/T, I personally am not thrilled with the list as they look like in-your-face mother-son stories.

My guess for how the Similar Stories system works:
1. No similar stories unless a story until someone Favorites a story Similar Stories are initially generated somehow off of tags
2. Once someone has Favorited a story, the Similar Story list is generated periodically for the story. No idea how often
3. If only one person has Favorited a story, then the five Similar Stories are the last five stories they have favorited
4. If multiple people have Favorited a story, then the stories that they have favorited get put into a list. It could be every story they have ever favorited, or it could be the last five stories they have favorited. The Similar Stories list is then the top 5 stories on the list in order of frequency of being favorited
5. The one exception to #4 is only one Similar Story is allowed to be by the author of the story that the list is for

I've never thought what the Similar Stories were for my story was very interesting. There's a huge amount of overlap between my stories. Checking three of my stories, their Similar Stories list are identical with the exception of my own story that's on the list.

Not automatically. For example, these two of mine don't show any of my other stories in Similar Stories:

The first is my only story in E/V, and the second is my only one in Romance. So it'd make sense that the people who saw them would be less likely to see/favourite my other stories.

This is what I've observed. The best way to know for sure is to check your story the moment it is published. It will have similar stories. There is no way such a list can exist based on favorites because there are no favorites. The composition of the list will begin to change once the story draws favorites.

I picked one of my stories at random and got all of the Similar Stories listed for it (see below - if you click on More you get a longer list). Interestingly enough, most of the stories (other than my own in bold and italic) are from Authors I favorited. Most of my lesbian stories have similar tags and are favorited by the same cast of suspects so seeing more than one of my stories would be expected if tags and favorites are used to generate the list.
