The missile defense system was designed to work against launches from Iran. The number of anti-missile missiles were no threat to Russia, since Russia could keep firing nukes at Poland and be guaranteed a hit once the supply of a-m missiles was exhausted.
Russia wasn't going to nuke Poland. We both know that. But Putin used the missile shield as an opportunity to act pissy, and Obama couldn't bend over fast enough once he was in office to make everything OK.
And the U.S. has gotten nothing in return. Putin treats Obama with contempt, though I'm sure you haven't noticed. He doesn't negotiate with Obama, he sits back and watches Obama do what Russia and Putin want.
