I don't think we can get anything like it in the UK, although Germany has a similar stuff (for culinary purposes) called "Pot" (I think).
Why would someone put vodka in a piecrust? While I know it gets mostly baked out, vodka and I don't always get along. Besides, it becomes redundant for me while visiting a Naked Party.
I knew I knew that name from somewhere! Thank you. That was on my mind when I woke up this morning.

Well, if you use a sourdough starter and keep it either in the refrigerator or refresh the pot regularly, it's immortal. My pot is a culture that's over two hundred fifty years old and it still works fine. 'Course, working with natural yeast is a different skill from the commercial stuff.

And/ Or how it's been kept ?
And/ Or what type of yeast ?
I'd quite agree with you if it was dried yeast for home-brew wine making. . .
