Sure, how many mobsters, serial killers, drug dealers, etc. have been protagonists in novels, movies, TV shows, etc.? You may not have to like the Corleone family or Tony Soprano, but there are attempts to understand how they got that way and figure out how they think. Even during the Hays Code era, there were many portrayals of criminals in movies. Many of these films and shows have been highly regarded by critics and audiences.

For short 'stroke' erotica we don't do much of a character journey. But in a long story we need a character arc.

If your hero/heroine is perfect: Jack Strong, square jaw, ex special forces marine, can recite the caliber of ammo from 100 paces away and always packs a survival knife, has a 5-foot long cock, and a harem of 30 women, is the world's best computer hacker, can beat bruce lee without getting up from his chair, has mirrorshades so reflective even vampires can see themselves in them, knows history (ALL of it), speaks 127 languages, calls everyone sir unless they're a "thug" or a woman, and is somehow only 18 years old and still in high school... That character has no personal journey to undergo... He's boring.

He's also about 83% of all the heroes in some of the genres around here...

Characters got to have flaws. And big flaws just means bigger stories.

My own long story was inspired by reading a whole series of stories with "Jack Strong" like heroes in them... and so I made a character who had questionable ethics, a toxic support network, and was very self sabotaging and would NOT win her journey. Even now as I'm in happier stories - I always make sure to "mess up" something about my characters so they have something to work on throughout the tale. And sometimes I just "mess up" something just to be interesting. People are dynamic.

I don't personally think the character in the OPs example was doing anything wrong. But giving characters quirky traits or exploring things about them that not everyone out there will agree with, just makes the characters more "human". More real.

Some folks though - don't get the concept of "fiction".

Just received this comment on a brother sister story which opens with the sister coming home from a party with her friends. They had a few drinks and they're passing around a bowl. Why did I write this? Two reasons, one I wanted the sister to be not quite thinking straight to add a little how can this happen for later in the story and two, this is what people at that age do(some people at any age still do) go out have fun and get a little buzz going.

I have had similar comments over the years, but what made this one different is the "Write like you care"

Again...It's okay to promote fictional incest, nothing wrong with that, but don't promote equally fictional partying.

These comments-or those along the same lines-show up a lot in taboo and I've seen them in NC where someone being sexually assaulted isn't an issue, but some random detail is.

I practice an honor among thieves type of mentality, if you're going to indulge in what most see as an extreme kink, then you really don't have much to say about other 'sins' within the story.

Erotica readers, who you would think would be very open and loose in things are an oddly preachy lot sometimes, even within the category they're choosing to read in. I think LW might be the biggest culprit with all the anger over make believe people cheating, but it seems like it shows up everywhere.

But again, they're reading about siblings screwing. Now in real life I condone neither, but if you're going to be okay with incest in a story I don't get where the pot thing seems worse.

I agree with muskyboy. Where did his anti-incest feelings come from? He's not a Boy Scout. We don't read of him going to church, or that his dad and/or mom were uptight conservatives, or his uncle molested him, or whatever. So all his protestations seem formulaic and perfunctory. So find another way to heighten the tension in the story, or provide sufficient evidence to support your character's position.

So their biggest problem wasn't the absurd premise, but that the brother was at first reluctant to actually carry it out.

Just because, I'm going to take that and run with it as a tangent to explore...

This is where we hit that blurry line:

Objecting over the conduct of a character vs. not liking a given a genre/fetish.

Tangent mode on:
"Back in my day" we had story codes on ASSTR - and for some reason most authors respected them despite no one enforcing anything - so you wouldn't accidentally click into a genre you did NOT like but also so you could find a genre you DID like. We have tags on literotica. I wish there was more of a culture of using them.

I'm not a fan of incest fiction. It has negative levels of appeal to me. Likewise underage, snuff, vore, racist / race-bating, violence & sex together. Usually I can very easily avoid landing on one of these stories. Where an author will risk getting a nasty comment from me is when there's no flag to let me know I might land on that. Which is NOT saying "the kinds of stories I don't like need to be flagged" - but rather it's saying "if everybody would please tag and categorize their stories - I could find the ones I'm seeking and not find the ones I'd rather not land in." (I actually have more trouble finding my kinks than I do with avoiding my squicks).

It's tangential to this topic because it's an easy come back to make in here: If you say people just need to understand it's fiction, why are you anti-incest stories? So I'm going there: "I'm anti me landing in such a story without knowing it would be that."

Obviously this then begs the question of whether or not the commenter brought up in the original post had a point - should there have been a flag to caution them?

That becomes a 'can of worms'. Given the example I think the answer is no... but am I guilty of a double standard for that?

I'd put forth that:

1. We should tag / warn / advertise for things that are major to the story or, and only because this is an erotica site; are sexualities / sexual kinks / fetishes.
2. We don't need that for minor stuff or conduct that is not "radically out there" (now there's a vaguely loaded concept).
3. The line is fuzzy. Like the old SCOTUS ruling on which porn counts as 'depraved' smut: You know it when you see it - but defining it is kinda impossible.
4. There are going to be edge cases where reasonable people don't agree and it looks like some of us have landed ourselves in double standards.
