First of all, I was normally hard as a rock during sex and would stay that way for some time, but I recently went through agony trying to figure out why my penis wasn't as hard as it usually was during sex and the problem wasn't getting any better. The wife was pretty frustrated about it as well, because she missed feeling all she could, and encouraged me to go to the doctor for a physical. I went to the doctor and had a checkup ang blood work done and everything came back normal. I do admit I experience stress occasionally, but not to the degree that would cause erectile dysfunction. I was told, "Well, you aren't getting any younger". To that I responded "Bullshit". I began seeing if my hypertension med was causing the problem, but my doctor put me on that hypertension (mild high blood pressure) to avoid erectile dysfunction. Not until I came across an article regarding Benadryl and antihistamines did everything begin to make sense. I have had allergies here in Florida to oak, pine, and grass pollens for years and, to relieve the symptoms of running nose, sneezing, etc., I began using Benadryl, an antihistamine. As I read the article, I learned that erections are a product of histamine in the male body, naturally occurring. By taking Benadryl, and this applies to Zyrtec D, Claritin, and any other antihistamine, it is counteracting the histamine in the body, thus producing erectile dysfunction. After learning this, I discontinued Benadryl and within a few days, voila, I am back to normal. The effects of antihistamines, fortunately, are reversible!

I wondered how many other men possibly suffer from this issue, so I decided to post this in an effort to spare others what I was about to go insane over. I hope this helps someone else! I encourage men to read this in order to avoid the frustrations I had gone through!

I think the box should say "Can cause erectile dysfunction in males". It also should say, "May cause dementia" which studies are beginning to indicate. I know neither will ever be found on the box and thankfully, I have neither now!

I've taken antihistamines for years and I never had any such problems. Maybe you're just a pathetic excuse for a man?

John, maybe you're a fucking douche bag! I despise little assholes like you who are smartasses when you're hiding behind a keyboard, but a pussy who'd shit on themselves if face to face. Fuck off you little prick.

Interesting, I've taken antihistamines for a long while, and though I've not been as hard, or stayed hard, I'm now 60 and struggle to get going at all, so do I put up with hay fever type problems to see if I can get it going again? Could be worth a try.

Yep. See below. Pseudoephedrine is used to free blood vessels and improve blood flow to knock back an erection.

“The pharmacy will provide you with a medication to try and counteract the trimix therapy. This is called pseudoephedrine HCl. If your erection is firm and lasts >3 hours, you should take 4 (30 mg) tablets of pseudoephedrine. ”

I'm 66 and had been taking benadryl for almost 20 years. I began taking them when I needed sleep in the Army while in Iraq in 2003. I didn't start having any issues until about 2 years ago. I've always stayed fit, exercising after retiring from the Army. I'm 6'4" and weigh 210 lbs, so I'm not obese nor do I have any cardiovascular issues, although I cracked 2 vertebrae iny neck while there. Good news is I quit taking the crap and within a few days, I was back to normal. I'd rather sneeze and snort than lose control of my extremity.

Actually this makes me think.
I’ve been having no problem getting aroused ,hell I’m horny all the time, but after a while things seem to fade to half hard, and as I become more frustrated by it , to fully soft.
I can usually bring out her toys, and watching them in use, get myself hard enough to jump back in and finish.
It started about 8 to 10 months ago.
I brought it up to my primary doc at a pre hernia surgery physical, so she did some blood work, and found no issues. Testosterone level is in the upper side of normal range. I’m 63, so she chalked it up to age, or stress , and gave me a prescription for the little blue pills. I’ve tried them 3 times so far, with no different results. But around that time I found that my Claritin Ild taken for years didn’t seem to be working as well, so I switched to Zyrtec. After reading this, I’ll try and do without it for a few weeks and see if I see a difference! How long did it take for you to see improvement?

Within a few days I began noticing a difference and within a week or so I was pretty much back to normal. I take 5mg Cialis daily to help a bit, plus it helps keep my BP down, which is an added bonus. In the initial post, there is a link that lists a lot of meds, to include blood pressure meds, that also can cause ED. You should look at the list if you haven't done so yet. Hope it helps!

Cialis and Viagra did not work for me. Trimix works great for me.

I never needed any of the ED drugs until this recent occurrence.
With any luck I will stop the Zyrtec and it will go away!
Then I’ll keep the viagra and save it to try on special occasions!

I don’t have any BP issues at all. They actually marvel at that , saying it’s perfect. considering my father and mother both take BP meds , and I drive a truck in the metro NY area every day!

My BP is mild. Military doctors put me on Atenolol (which is also on the ED list) that another doctor told me is like the "last resort" BP med. I was put on a very mild BP med instead that doesn't affect sexual function. BP is great now and I feel like I have my life back (except for the neck injury). Good luck and hopefully you'll get back full function too!

Men should talk to their doctor about any meds or pills they take. My husband, a bit older, has several things his Doc has changed to help the problem. Seek good advice.

As we like to say, he may not be as good as he once was, but he's as good once as he ever was.

Quercetin is a natural antihistamine in many foods. I plan to eat more of it for anti-inflammatory effects, with apples, blueberries, green tea, etc. I peeled apples when I could have left the skin on for health.

Of course day one of not taking Zyrtec is probably too soon to expect much, BUT I was very ready at bed time!
Unfortunately, it was also my wife’s Estrogen cream night , and she had already applied it by the time I got home from a meeting, so testing its longevity wasn’t in the cards.

My ex-boyfriend faced a similar issue, so he had to buy cialis from Canadian Pharmacy ,and it's incredible how a seemingly unrelated medication can impact something as crucial as erectile function. Thanks for sharing this valuable information; it might just help others who are struggling with the same problem. Sharing experiences like this can make a big difference!

That's a decongestant, not an antihistamine.
