Have things (for tourists) in New Zealand improved any since 1954?

I read somewhere that NZ has a problem with a mass East Indian migration trend occurring and it is causing problems for the locals with rapes and such. The article said that they banned single males from entering the country which led to many of them pretending to be females so that their applications would be accepted. A sick and twisted bunch.

No. This was Australia.

I remember reading or watching some Cosmo/Buzzfeed/Faux News article that a condom manufacturer discovered Kiwi women have the most partners on average than any other country.

So there's the sluttiest women in the world, cheap good lamb, great sailing and better fishing. Sigh, almost a shame it's so far away from everywhere else. :D

My husband was there recently...well, at least the condom use is high.

Jeebus, you're really kind of a creep aren't you.

Only on my good days.
Went to highschool with a Maori, he taught us the Haka and we'd do it before every football match. Worked a treat.

Plus I'm looking forward to watching this years America's Cup, which basically has become "Our Kiwi's & Frenchmen against your Kiwi's & Frenchmen".

Minus Invercargill. Shitty depressing weather in an ugly town cut off from everybody else leads to shitty moods and attitudes.

Thanks. I love my home town too.

Are there any eateries in Auckland or Christchurch anyone would particularly recommend?

Some links for auckland eateries. :)

1954 was a long time ago and much has changed here since then.

For the most part new zealand is a great place to visit but like anywhere if you're doing the back packing thing or hitch hiking don't do it alone. Don't sleep rough. Don't trust everybody.

We like to go out of our way for tourists and new zealand has a lot going for it but there is the element of bad guys who will take advantage of people who don't speak a lot of english or are travelling on their own.

Lots of young people come here on working visas to work in orchards, wineries and farms and travel around and love it.

Some of the places I love the most are Hobbiton. Weta workshop. A lot of the bigger Maori Maraes (The marae (meeting grounds) is the focal point of Māori communities throughout New Zealand. A marae is a fenced-in complex of carved buildings and grounds that belongs to a particular iwi (tribe), hapū (sub tribe) or whānau (family) are very welcoming to people who want to visit.

Waiheke island is amazing.

What about kiwi cuisine? Is there a distinct style? Is it different from Australia's?

No.

The only distinctive kiwi cuisine is the Maori hangi, (earth oven). Apart from that I guess we specialise in seafood, but there is nothing distinctive.

Our McDonald's, Burger King, kfc, dominoes, etc are as good as you'd find anywhere in the world.

Our range of candy bars and cookies is among the best in the world, and that includes pineapple lumps, yes chewy pinapple flavoured candy coated in chocolate.

Aren't there a lot of sheep in NZ? I would have expected you to specialize in lamb and mutton.

Debbie... Your home town is invercargill?! 😨
Hello neighbour!

Kia Ora, mate. Invergiggle born and bred but live in the North Island now. :)

Debbie, can you still get pineapple chunks and marshmallow fish? I used to love pineapple chuncks when I was small.

Yes indeed. Check this out :)

A lot of roasts, (lamb, pork) Hāngi, Boil-up ( pork bones bacon hock potatoes, puha - green leafy vegetable native to nz.) Rewena Bread,(maori bread) shepherds pie - savoury mince with mashed potato on top, mince pies - beef not fruit mince in pastry.

Corned silverside mustard sauce and veges (corned beef cooked long and slow)

pavlova with cream and kiwifruit

A lot of Island food like Oka I'a (raw fish) in coconut oil capsicum, chilli, tomatoes, spring onion.

White bait fritters. :)

I once went to Invercargill - in August, with a friend. He insisted on a swim in the ocean, I declined. He is Australian - nuff said?

Actually Americans should beware of one particularly savage animal in NZ Cuisine - the Pipi. They should only be hunted by fully armed desperates. ;)

Though on reflection I had some really good Barbecue Pork at a Maori celebration in the far far north of the North Island. Long time ago but a good memory.

Such were the petty vexations of the country that Heinlein spluttered even at the famous narrow-gauge railways, which in a better mood he would have liked.

Can somebody tell me about those narrow-gauge railways, and why anyone would like or dislike them?

Which speaks better of NZ, Heinlein or this?

In my opinion there is an under current of systemic and institutional racism within the majority European ethnic group, although almost all of them would deny this.

Interesting to see two different opinions here.

From the perspective of an immigrant, I'm more with ishat on this, but then I don't have the more in depth understanding of these issues, that only a NZer would have.
-- Indeed I came across a few people who displayed xenophobic or racist attitudes, but the good experiences outweighed the bad ones By Far. And as I perceived it, I haven't seen much racism against maoris either.

magicalmoments talked about institutional racism tho.
I would be interested in finding more about his views, or Debby's on that.

New Zealand is beautiful and bountiful. It is a place with incredible things to see. The kiwis are wonderfully cute, but only a tiny part of its charm. You can ski and swim on the same day if you have a mind too, the wild swimming is among the best in the world imo. The lAndscapes can be breathtaking, or you which they were ( Roturua) ( sp). It's a place of great, great beauty in nature , warmth but no messing around in its people generally. Better fish n chips than Britain, great icecream :)

Thank you for the kind words La damnee

A must go is Al Brown's The Depot in Federal St, Auckland. Always take overseas visitors there

I've never heard of heinlien but I imagine new Zealand in 1954 would have been pretty dire. Probably not much improved from Mark Twain's visit in the late 1890s, although he gave a fairly positive report.

I see in today's paper that some German outfit has judged Wellington new Zealand, our capital city, as the best place to live in the world. As a former resident of the city I can certainly say it is the best city I have ever lived in.

Also lonely planet judged the province of Taranaki, my current home, as the 2nd best tourist destination in the world, I think that's what it was.

New Zealand also routinely features in the top five of the most free and uncorrupt countries in the world.

We also have a reputation of being clean and green as well, although that has been called into question recently with the impact of intensive dairy farming on the environment.

In my opinion there is an under current of systemic and institutional racism within the majority European ethnic group, although almost all of them would deny this.

All in all it's not a bad place to live, I certainly have never been tempted to live elsewhere and I've visited a large part of the world.

Spent a lot of time in the Naki mm, great place, the economic foundation being the black & white gold.

As you say, NZ, a great place to live and now seen as a bolt hole, if needed by some of the well healed. We do not have a water problem, per se, as do the Aussies.

Debbie, can you still get pineapple chunks and marshmallow fish? I used to love pineapple chuncks when I was small.

Pineapple lumps you can still purchase along with the chocolate fish. And naturally Manuka Honey.

Can somebody tell me about those narrow-gauge railways, and why anyone would like or dislike them?

The gauge is only 3 ft 6inches. Consequently passenger carriages are very narrow, compared to what Europeans or Yanks may be used to. I guess if it is all you know you don't mind because ignorance is bliss. But if you're used to being able to stretch out you might find it annoying.
