Floating a concept, possible challenge

The baseline could be set up in a thread like this, sort of like that world building thread, 'Tales from Lan ... ' whatever it was.

Yeah, Leinyere. I mentioned that above.

@Nouh_Bdee runs that. He did A LOT of legwork and "sales" to achieve buy-in from people who continue to love it, and part of the reason why is because Leinyere is almost limitless. Before he started, he constructed a map, invented a mythology, and then crowdsourced the rest. We worked on it for some months before writing anything, and it continues to be a work in progress.

You'd need to do all that legwork. And even then, I tend to agree with Keith: though there are tropes that would expand this beyond a mall setting, it would feel very constrained to me as a writer. Just my $.02 from having set stories in malls before.

There are stores in some areas run by people who were raised in other countries. China Town, Korea Town, etc. are more well known ideas, but I've also seen stores that carry products from England, Germany, France, etc. Exactly as they would be sold in the home country. Yours could be such a store. A British citizen is transferred to a US office of the company they work for. The spouse or other family member gets homesick and opens a store selling stuff from home. I'm sure there are lots of ways to Litify such a store.
Or Australia even. A store like that could be quite interesting, if authentic.

OIC

No, I wouldn't post in such a Mall. My worlds are my universes. And I'm very selfish with things I create.
On one hand, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." On the other hand, I could imagine how botched this could get. (I must be pretty narcissistic to think that anyone who imitate me.) Anyway, the mall should be in New Jersey.

Way on the other side of the Hudson
Deep in the bosom of suburbia
I met a young girl she sang mighty fine
Tears on my pillow and Ave Maria
Standing by the water fall in Paramus Park
She was working for the friends of BAI . . .

I've got to stop these digressions! Assuming that this could ever happen, I think it would be polite to check with the other author first? (Paramus Park is not a park, but a mall, and it did have a waterfall inside.)

Essential that it be in Jersey.

John Gorka's I'm from New Jersey has it all, shopping malls, angst, stubbornness, and durability.

"I'm from New Jersey, I don't expect too much
If the world ended today, I would adjust"

Yes, from Colonia. I've never heard of him before, and of course that goes or the song too. 1991: It's slightly dated perhaps? Big hair? That was everywhere then, not just in one state, and now it's gone. "I watched too much TV when I was young." So did everyone else in America since about 1950.

I'm not from New Jersey, but I lived there from 1984 to 1999. Six different towns, if I counted correctly. Car dependent? Of course, but so is almost everywhere else in the country. Most of them don't have tolls, but that is coming soon enough. Shopping malls: also everywhere in this land of the free, although they are starting to be killed off by Amazon et al.

More like Ohio than Texas? Yes, true. But I also suspect he's trying to defend his home state against what people in Manhattan think of it.

More stuff on the story ideas thread.

Is there enough interest to dig into this, or just forget it all?

I'm not sure it really needs a specific geographic location. There are malls that are almost tourist attractions in and of themselves. But this doesn't have to go that way. May even work if a bit more gritty.

I'm in. I think it takes place in a small European country called Litpornia that enjoys immigration from people everywhere. International hub of trade and commerce. You can get lo mein, soufflé and Philly cheese in the food court.

The stories you are about to read aren't true. The names haven't been changed to protect anyone. They've been completely made up, plucked out of thin air, or at least the author's minds.

Please notice the profusion of blood around the edges of the paper on some of the stories. When plucking tales out of one's mind, please, please exercise great caution so that you live to pluck another day.

No reply from Admin on this. Not sure what to make of that.

I think I was being tongue-in-cheek when I suggested a location. But then again, this entire forum often seems tongue-in-cheek.

It's an imaginative idea, but I wouldn't give permission for anyone to use my stories in that way. (I think I understood the premise correctly.) If anybody else feels comfortable doing that, it's their choice.

Change isn't something the Admin is all that fond of, I guess. 🤪

I'm not sure I'd put it that way. They approve these kinds of things all the time. Too much, in fact, according to some.

I suspect this one is too similar to Amorous Goods, but it does seem odd that the OP would get zero reply whatsover.

IDK

Hi all, I don't think there was too much enthusiasm for the anthology/linked stories idea based around the Mall, but it got me thinking and writing and I've posted a story "Joe's Spa."
If anyone wants to write a story and feed into or off of this story or characters please feel free to do so.
Happy writings
