Paul Meskil, a crime reporter of New York City, wrote the book in 1953. Its his entire opus of noir. Its long forgotten but an excellent specimen of noir. Noir is a tale of damaged people going to Hell. This tale is about a homicide sergeant who goes to Hell with every character who matters. All
end up dead.
Its a BDSM romance, if that's possible. I get nothing from all the violence, and the end is a bloodbath.
What I like is how the author clearly illustrates how to write noir and conceal the identity of the serial killer to the very end. Sergeant Barney is frantic to rescue the killer when he gets a chest full of lead by the helpless killer. Sergeant Barney is a big fool.
