It's the only addiction I don't want to be in recovery for.
No, don't do that. You just let the fuckers win if you give up on your first outing. Can close this post if you like got some pretty negative feedback about one of my stories, I did tell him I was new and after constructive criticism but got told my story was bad, rewrite it so I think ill just go back to reading and forget about my stories keep them in my head.

Narcissistic, self-assured writers who get tons of praise (well deserved or otherwise) rarely grow. It's the Masochistic writers that really thrive. If critiques from others are your beatings, then start self-flagellating while you edit. Even the most beautiful garden can't grow without some shit. If you want to be a writer, don't be afraid of getting shit on once in a while.
The Author's Hangout is a hall of mirrors. We all know that, it's why we're all here.Narcissistic, self-assured writers who get tons of praise (well deserved or otherwise) rarely grow. Writers get better by writing more, not because they get beaten on, but because they keep going.
I don't own a hair-shirt, and I don't do self-flagellation, but I have got better .

Narcissists punish non compliant others. Narciscusm has nothing to with conceit and egoeccentricity.
Feels like I can echo quite a few of what people have already said.
Especially experiencing a strong impulse to write and the need to put down vivid imagery my brain likes to generate at any given time, depending on inspiration.
I can say, also, that when I initially started writing seriously, it was a means of self-therapy in some ways. After a particularly rough time during my teenage years, writing seemed to help. And the more I wrote, the more it fed into wanting to write more.
Also @Kamular84 : I definitely would keep writing. If you've got the urge and had it in the beginning, and you have stories to tell, I feel it's never a bad idea to express them in some way. I tend to look at any criticism I get, even if I don't agree, just to absorb and keep in mind for when I try another project. Sometimes I even use them as prompts to experiment with breaking my usual mould. Hope you keep writing!
From Good Ole Wikipedia:
"Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes. The term originated from Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water."
Perhaps you're thinking of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, in which people have a grandiose opinion of themselves and are manipulative to cruel with others.
Most disorders come with full libraries of relevant facts, none of it useful for recognizing the exact problem. Many MDs scratch their heads till after mid night struggling with accurate diagnoses.
The baseball bat scene in UNTOUCHABLES is all you need know about narciscism.
I've always been interested in writing, but found that writing fiction is just a tremendous amount of work to get everything right. Over the years I wrote a lot of technical non-fiction for my jobs, which was easier because the material was given. I could just work on style and try to make it clearer and better to read than the usual drivel.
So I'm going to admit that I started writing erotica for pretty much the same reason that people read it: if I put in the work and get through the story, I'll get to the good part and can have some fun!
