Damn, that was good. I'd take another but I'm supposed to do a fasting blood work tomorrow and don't want to upset anything. However, Thursday evening? Wahoo!

If anyone is in the market for a new cookbook, some food porn that is actually useful, I recommend Thomas Keller's new Ad Hoc at Home. It's by the man generally acknowledged to be the finest chef in America and arguably in the world. Unlike some of his former books which, while beautiful, are just plain intimidating, this is "home possible" cooking. I've got his Roast Chicken on a Bed of Vegetables in the oven right now and HM and I are both drooling all over ourselves.

Is this the recipe? http://bewitchingkitchen.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/a-classic-roast-chicken/

Yup, that's the one. I admit to some modifications. I refuse to be in the same building with rutabagas so I substituted more carrots, a bigger onion and used a yan instead of potatoes. Everything else is the same and it smells heavenly.

Did you put in parsnips instead of rutabagas? I actually like both for the slightly peppery addition. I use them in the Cornish Pasties I make for the fuzzy one.

I think it must be the difference in climate but parsnips, salsify, rutabagas, etc. have just never had much following on the Left Coast. However, given how the chicken juice dripped down and flavored everything underneath, I sure wouldn't place any bets against it tasting good. Damn, but that may be the finest chicken I ever cooked. And there weren't enough vegetables! Imagine a chicken dish so good that you come back for seconds on veggies. What is the world coming to?

MOLLY!!!!~

How are you? How have you been feeling lately?

Pretty good. The infection in my skull is almost gone, my heart is almost back to a regular beat and most of the swelling is gone from my joints.

Watch out for some of those viruses our there. Some of them are real doozies.

Don't know if it is me or not but that is usually how I do my chicken. The family grew up with veggies cooked in the drippings.

It is the climate. Around here, those are veggies that we harvest in the fall--usually after the first light frost. It's the cooler autumn temps that give it the lovely earthy flavor.

Well that's good news. You'll be so much more playful in Chicago that way! ;)

That is really great to hear. You sounded like a female Job the last time we talked.

My co-worker is always getting sick. She's from a tropical climate, but she's been living in the country for over a decade now. Always cold, always sick.

The important thing is that you're good and healthy for Chicago. And the strip poker game! :)

One thing I discovered: When your head is infected, it causes all manner of little symptoms such as depression, paranoia, melancholy, rage, and just general bitchiness. I apologize if I upset you. Apparently, I was quite ill. Didn't even realize it until the day I woke up, fell down, looked in the mirror to see one eye protruding and found all the dried blood on my pillow case--enough to truly frighten me. By the time my doctor had a look at me, my scalp had swollen so big I looked like the elephant (wo)man.

Your co-worker needs exercise. It will help regulate her body temp.

And I'm in no condition to strip anything.

I've been bugging her for a while to get to the doctor and have her thyroid checked. She has all the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Exercise is also wonderful for focussing the mind. It's been a real boon to my job, which has shifted into overdrive (one of the reasons I haven't been here much).

Are you going to need someone to do it for you? :cattail:

Oh, and no worries whatsoever about your bitchfest. Seriously, I have some majorly high-strung friends, and what you were posting, that wasn't nothing, darling.

Thanks, doll.

So, will you be in Chi-town?

If I don't come back, it's because of my connection. I seem to have issueswith it tonight.
