Hello Richard,

I'm new to posting on this forum, but I have followed your thread here for some time now. I wanted to say that I think you're one of the Good Guys and that I hope the future brings you untold happiness.

I am curious as to which herbs you have found effective against asthma? I tried coltsfoot for a while, but discovered later on that the risks outweighed the benefits.
Esme

I have some first hand experence with this
my mother who is now 86
had asthma and a general wekness of the lungs
including pnomina (sp) at lest twice a year

We live in northwest Michigan
(look at the palm of your right hand
we live at the tip of your little finger)

Winters can be cold and damp

Four (4)_ years ago I got mom to agree to
use an herbal combination for the lungs
well it is used for the lungs but each herb in it is actually a stomach herb

The eastern herbal schools call the lungs and stomach
the sword and the sheild

The combination has boneset herb, horseradish root, mullein leaves, Fennel seeds, fenugreek seeds.

In the product line I sell and yes we do sell in England, it is called ALJ

I hope this helps.

I do run an herbal e-zine
It's home page is
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/AsktheHerbSpecialist/

Hope to hear more from you
I like people who think I am a good guy and wish me lots of happiness

((((Richard))))))

Hope your garden is doing better. I miss having one. I love the desert, but gardening can be a heartbreaking hobby here. We do have a HUGE pine tree, and lots of wildflowers in the yard and sunflowers, too.

Re the herbs, with my allergy issues, I've found most herbals hayfever issues for me. Like Esme said, I've found that sage is helpful. However, I can't burn it; the smoke particles inflame my lungs. I take a few teaspoons of the dry stuff, or a few sprigs of fresh and drop it in boiling water and then breathe the steam. I know sage is not technically related to the menthol herbs, but it has a similar effect on the "breathing apparatus" as my dr would call it. Sage is also good for strains and sprains. Again, you make a tincture as above and dip an unbleached linen or cotton cloth in it, and while it's still warm, apply to the injured part as a compress. ;)

I'm not a formal herbalist like Richard, but I do manage to dr. myself as needed.

:rose:  :rose: Richard

Hi again,

Now that herbal mixture is really interesting - do you use it as an infusion?
Fennel seeds I can completely understand, I make a cough syrup out of them which is very soothing and child-safe. Boneset, of course, it's an antispasmodic, I've used it before with elderflowers for really bad flu but wouldn't have made the jump to use it for bug-induced asthma. Mullein makes sense too, it's another antispasmodic and a sedative as well, and fenugreek are anti-inflammatory. The only thing I can't figure out is the horseradish root. I looked it up and would guess that it has the effect of helping the constricted capilliaries in the lungs to relax, is that right?

I hope that your Mum is feeling much better now throughout the year.
By the way, that trick of using the right hand to represent the United States is very clever; even the geographically inept, such as myself, can understand a location when it's explained like that! Isn't Michigan just a little south of Alaska in that case? Brrrrr!

Hello Mariposa, it's always a pleasure to meet another herb enthusiast. Sage is definately a favourite of mine, I make sage tea quite regularly. I do love the taste of it, but I also heard an old wive's tale which associates it with longevity - can't hurt to try!

I am sorry I mislead you
Michigan is shaped like the palm of your right hand
Michigan sets center of US
and way north

no where near Alaska
and BTW much of Alaska is warm all year
has to do with some kind of current
I am about 60-70 miles south of the 45th pareal (sp)

ALJ comes in capsules and liguid

mom has not had pnomunia or a serious respitory anything

stocking up on sage, cause I sure could use some wisdom It's been one of those days, again. One should not tell the fbi asshole assigned to her airport that he is"the current greatest living asshole of the western world" to his face. It makes for supervisor discussions..:(

Nope, D's not a dad. What a waste, both of you. You'd be good dads.

I have two grown children
they do not speak to me

I now shoot blanks
With all the VA benfits I would be able to give children
like medical care, college education
and as much as I love kids ..... I would love to find marry/collar one with children I could adopt

Looks like this is my official "open mouth and insert foot" post today. :( (((Richard)))) Sorry if I screwed it up, I hope I didn't hurt your feelings or anything. I just thought I remembered you saying that you didn't have kids.
