It's funny, we've come to agree that the never-ending renovations are neither of our faults, yet we go through periods where we blame the other, and then periods where we blame ourselves. Mr. Tat didn't want to spend a lot of money; I wanted an old house. Put the two together, and voila! You've got yourself a fixer-upper, with major arguments over how, exactly, we should fix it (read: do the work ourselves or hire someone).
As for Mr. Blandings . . . the original has Myrna Loy. By default, it wins. Even if she weren't in it, though, it is much, much better (even though it has some not-so-awesome 1940s racial stuff). Have you never seen it, PL? It was on constant rotation in my house growing up.
Haha, this is why my mom refuses to buy old/used cars or houses. I always think that fixing up sounds good, but the reality is probably not so much fun. And mostly I'd hire someone, b/c I'm not so good at the house stuff.
I have indeed seen it and even used a couple of the names in one of my books.
