World's largest democracy on verge of seismic shift in attitudes towards women?

that would make them a financially dependent nation and thusly not one the worlds largest economies... and this simply isnt true, as they are a g20 nation

so once again, does it hurt being as stupid as you?

do you have some sort brain disease which makes you progressively less intelligent the more you type?

Face it, you would not fit in there, the folks are weaving baskets for a living and playing with Cobras.

Then there is the Pakistani & Afghanistan border wars.

Anyway, to answer the question "Is India on the verge of a seismic shift in attitudes towards women?"; The answer is no, unless you mean 'verge' in geologic time scales (going with the metaphor).

First time? Just because it's now making our headlines doesn't mean that past incidents haven't made theirs.

Curious as to how you arrived at these conclusions. Please expound.

please point out how concerned the protestors have been about the girl... the majority of them have been about calling for the death of the perpetrators

that's not pro-woman's rights.....that's pro-anger

since I was nearly killed by a guy in India I've watched their news, i live in Vancouver we have the largest Indo population in the world outside of the Indian subcontinet.. finding news from India isnt difficult

the fact is women's rights arent really a concern for them

I have to read local news about Indian ex-pats who come here and realize how shitty they had it....that's when the action starts

in fact there has been more then one attempted murders of womens rights leaders right here at home in the last couple years

you really dont have a clue of what you're talking about

does all your international education come from Buggs Bunny cartoons?

or are they too confusing and complex for you to follow?

If it's (one) of the first times the people are outraged publicly, it's a stepping stone either way.

Want to take a guess at how much of the world's computer code is written in India, paedo?

BBC's Newshour podcast today is rife with pro-women commentary. To be fair there's also a lot of pro-anger as well. Check it out on iTunes.

I'm of Indian descent so my access to Indian news may be a bit more intimate than your sources and here too, cousins living there are talking women's rights IN ADDITION to castration for the rapists.

I'm also hard-pressed to believe that Vancouver has a bigger pop. than NYC and the tri-state area. I can't speak to the murders of women's rights leaders...that might be a Canada thing.

I agree that India will not change any time soon. Much of it is third world, and the rest is full of poverty that makes Detroit look like a Wellsian utopia.

I'm guessing West London has a bigger population, too.

India rape victim's body cremated in New Delhi

Attitudes by Indians toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen as provocative.

It should be noted that the temp on 12/16 PM was seasonably cool. Perhaps her Uggs were too provocative to be worn at 9:30pm local time.

I'm of Indian origin and have to say that, like most things, the truth is somewhere between two extremes. Yes, there is a lot of bias against women but it is far from being the world's worst place to be a woman. India has had a woman prime minister, currently the leader of the party in power is a woman, several chief ministers of different states are women, and I would hazard a guess that India has a larger percentage of women CEOs than the US does. It's a land of stark contrasts.

I checked the ethnic demographic for Vancouver. Group desegnated as South Aisan (I assumr India would be the majority)

208,535

9.94%

Also I doubt that threats on reform leaders is a Canadian thing. I think these people come from wherever and simply carry on their own culture irregardless of the new location.

There's about 176,000 indians in Queens alone and ~400,000 in all of NYC.

The other point was made tongue-in-cheek.

I would think that NYC would be the prime goal for Indians globally. In fact I think that a lot of the newfound wealth in India is due to Indians going to western countries, learning the ropes, making some money yhen going ome to get something going.

"Tounge in cheek"? better be, Canada has done better than a lot of countries in managing assimilation.:)

6.6% of London's population are Indian. In a total pop. of 8.2 million, I make that around 540,000.

another girl assaulted today on another bus according to the news

education, money, the internet, but most of all Time will eventually change things. they're getting there - hopefully they'll get there sooner than later. more modern world-views will supercede the old as those older generations pass....

Honestly, I didn't quite understand that point. Indian rights activists in Canada being killed for advocating Indian rights?
