World's largest democracy on verge of seismic shift in attitudes towards women?

~~~
Congratulations on an interesting Thread, islandman, well done...let me see if I can mess it up...
In terms of population, more women are without rights in the world than those with rights.
In this entire thread, it is taken for granted what women having equal rights is a good and right thing...yes?
I am not addressing the subject of this Thread, rape, as violence against any person for any reason is not acceptable behavior.
Is it ignorance that keeps half the worlds population in virtual slavery? I have read many a write that insists women in Muslim and other cultures are quite happy to be protected and not required to take on roles traditionally occupied by men only.
They do not want independence and equal rights. They do not want freedom from being oppressed; they want it to continue.
If results of emancipation in the western world are any guidelines, then people elsewhere may not want women to be equal for good reason.
Islandman, this is not an attempt to thwart your Thread, I think violence against women should be punished everywhere and more effort made to protect them. It is sad and tragic that such things happen on public transportation and no one stopped it, or that people cannot travel in security.
Perhaps urging other countries to follow western culture is not a good thing? Perhaps the agitation for such changes actually does more harm than good?
A portion of the political spectrum 'believes' that women should enjoy equal rights with men, and perhaps they are right. But, perhaps they are wrong. Perhaps the natural order of male domination is the 'right' way for societies to conduct themselves?
Except you dont know what you're talking about
there are just as many women in those muslim dominated countries that do want thier freedom.. but get punished physically and legally if they try to assert themselves
or do you think those acid attacks, bombings of schools of girls, mass rpaes of organized women, etcetera.. are just the " right way" for societies to conduct themselves
