be flattered

Look at the bright side PP -- you are noticeable.

What I am trying to figure out while reading this thread top to bottom is how one might define a foreigner. I'm american and I am as much a foreigner as they come. It's all in how you look at it, and in where you are.

And where you're coming from and where you're going to...

And whether you're a shadow of your former self or merely a shipwreck of your self esteem...

Good God, I can feel a deep philosophical discussion coming on...

And that is why I just can't seem to care about any of this trolling, except for the vile shit he spews at Vixenshe. THAT pisses me off.

Well, I mean the paint by numbers thing, and his other crap has me cracking up and anyone that can make me laugh gets a gold starfish.

Yayati, you need to get fucked by a 14" dong in your tight little ass. That way, when open up that sphincter and fart out your vile words, you'll be less squeeky and spurty, and instead of being only mildly offensive, you'll be the most repugnant bastard here at lit. That is what you are going for, right?

You really just gotta let the crap flow out more freely. I want to be smothered in your shit quick. I hate slow and painful tortorousness. Kill me quick. Please. ok? thanx.

Ok -- serious comment here

The comment was made that americans can't take criticism and others can. That is *BULLSHIT* but there is a grain of truth there.

Think for a second -- US is an immigrant hodgepodge that worked because of "assimilation". Everyone becomes the same, pretending to all be from the same small village in the english midlands or something. So we aren't *REALLY* french and german, english and irish, greek and turk. Those folk are always fighting one another. Here we all are AMERICANS. Like peas in a pod. If you don't confirm & cooperate you will be crushed.

Of course this is now not politically correct, but the behavior lingers. As do shreds of unity.

We're the only ones following U.N. resolutions. The U.N. isn't even following their resolutions.

Because they are fucking retarded to assume that we are the world's scapegoat for everything.

Fuck off.

We don't need your help, or your opinion on what we should be doing for ourselves.

We know what we want out of life. Now get out of our way if you don't want to join in on the prosperity and happiness of being free.

:)

Don't hold back baby! Tell us how you REALLY feel!! There is much to say for honesty.

Now come on. The BBC is state supported but not state run. Attempts have been made to exert a subtle influence on it and it has always resulted in scandal and loss of face. The License fee (effectively a charge for owning a TV) pays for the BBC and is supported by law. That is the extent of direct government control. And propaganda? What would be the point of using the BBC? Most of its programming is light entertainment, often bought in from the US networks. Most of our news media (Sky and several major newspapers) is owned by a certain Rupert Murdoch. What kind of passport does he hold?

.

Murdoch is I think an Australian, although I am not sure, and I would consider the media outlets that he owns in the us to be right leaning. He owns Fox, Fox News, The NY post and I think the Washington Times.

good post.
There are two main languages, as you mentioned. But there are, like many countries, countless dialects. So even learning one of the languages (mission impossible, by the way) screws you up an hour down the river.

and then there is the fascinating system the Chinese have for numbers, using their fingers. Because of the differences in dialect. Nevermind, though, once you learn 1-10, you go down the river to the next region and they have another finger signing system. Frustrating but true. It drove me crazy.

And don't forget the Uighur region in Xianxiang Province in the west. Arabic in origin, the Uighurs have their own Arabic dialect. (which the Chinese are desperately trying to annihilate, along with their culture)

One of my IR professors was constantly going on about the Weegars(sp?) who are a ethnic seperatist movement in western china. Do you know anything about them or have you been in that region?

He was indeed born in Australia, but he took American nationality in the mid-90's. Here he owns BSKYB- the whole sattelite TV shebang and the Sun and the Times. That means he has the biggest newspapers in both the tabloid and broadsheet readerships.

Quite a large part of north-western China is supposedly a semi-autonomous region. It happens to be no further from Beijing than Tibet is.

There are several minor dialects in China (basically languages in their own right), but Cantonese is currently the most widely spoken, although Mandarin is used in other countries which fall within China's sphere of influence- there are many Mandarin speakers in Malaysia for example.

That's probably because Mandarin was until recently the language of government in China. I believe that Cantonese is now the official dialect, but I'll have to go check when the change was made.

Other way round... Mandarin, or more correctly "Modern Standard Chinese" is the "Official" language - Cantonese is the Southern dialect - and that spoken by most HongKongers... ;)
