Who's the best live band ?

I went to Leeds music festival two weeks ago and over the 3 days, i saw one of the best live band's i'd seen in ages they blew everyone else away.
The band was... Rage Against The Machine .They were pretty low down on the bill and only played for an hour (not long enough) the sound was spot on espcially with it been a fine line between sounding good and shite, playing together as a unit .Tom Moreno guitar skills are unbelivable the notes and sounds he get's from his guitar are amazing.

Also there were the Foo Fighters who were pretty awesome and Limp Bizkit were cool but not as good has i thought they would be.

Other good live show's have to be Metallica on the master of puppets tour before the tragic death of Cliff Burton R.I.P. the raw power on stage and the force and speed of there early tracks was just mind blowing and ground breaking.

I carn't leave without mention those aussie rockers AC/DC the stage show you get when you see them live is brillant the cannon's , the bell and Angus running round like a madman . Great showmen and great show.

So i wonder who are your favorite's and why

p.s Nicole are you really a metalhead?

Pink floyd and I am STILL yet to see them.... Roxette were really good... Def FX were brilliant....

Clawfinger was amazing.

When I saw AC/DC in Montreal I was blow away.

U2 Popmart tour was really really great.

Metallica at the Roskilde festival was actually a bit of a disappointment.

Alanis Morrisette at the same festival was amazing.

And oldie but goodie, was Erasure three years ago. 20.000 people going down memory lane, and dancing away.

Rage against the Maschine was also amazing, even though I stage dived and got a bloody nose from it LOL.

One of the best bands I've seen is the Allman Brothers Band...Then next would be the Eagles.
But the ultimite would be George Thorogood. That man can rock.

Pluto Monkey.

My fav tune is "American Woman (Meet the Scotsquatch)"

This group is electrifying, especially their hair.

I was at Leeds too. I must say I grew out of the likes of rage and AC/DC years ago but there were some great acts there. Pulp and Beck are two that stand out in my memory. I don't know how old you are Andy so don't take offence but didn't you find it annoying the way the average age of the festival goers was about 17? I'm only 23 - surely I'm not supposed to feel old at festivals for another 10 years!!

By the way, did you wish that Deborah had been there too so she could have blown the heads off Blink 182? (And I mean that in violent-metal-meets-flesh-and-bone kind of way before any of you start?!)

Scream for me Long Beach!

IRON MAIDEN!!!!

Eddie rocks....

Ya can't beat Dave Murray and Adrian Smith trading leads!

Steve Harris....the Fastest finger playing bassist alive!(RIP Cliff)

Nicko and the drum kit from "too much is never enough"

....an Bruce the air raid siren!

AC/DC is great also...saw'em last week with my 14 year old future headbanger...

UP THE F*ING IRONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep sure am :D

I have to say the two best concerts I ever went to were at this tiny little indoor place over here called Thebarton Theater, they blew my mind enough to still rate them as the best ever for me. I saw Faith No More and Meatloaf there, Faith No More did all their own work, including setting up their instruments and packing them up at the end of the concert, they had only just started out and they fucking blew the place away. Meatloaf .... Wow, the man makes it look like a stroll through the park on a warm spring day. He makes you feel like your on the stage with him and his voice is just indescribable.

Metallica were quite a disappointment to me, I saw them after James had his Burns and Jason did most of the singing, which don't get me wrong he was good at but it wasn't James, and that is what you pay your money to see. Also we got them pretty much at the end of three years of recording and touring and they looked damn right bored up there to say the least.

U2 Zoo tour was okay but it was way too loud and I mean that to say they were distorted, which took away from just how good they were.

Would you believe that Ugly Kid Joe were also very good in concert??? My sister dragged me along and I have to say that they were good, kept you wanting more all night long.

Kiss were shit. We saw them with no make-up and sat right in front of Gene Simmons (yes SAT, that is how bad it was), I'll tell you this I could have chopped that tongue off by the end of the night, can the man do nothing but stick that out?

Aerosmith ... Fucking Awesome, except for some odd reason the crowd wasn't getting into them, which pissed Steven Tyler off to no end and he actually walked off at one stage, Pissed me off that this group hadn't been to Australia for so damn long and no-one was getting into the mood until the fucking singer walked off. They were brilliant though and I would rate them after Meatloaf and FNM.

I have been to quite a few concerts apart from these that blew my mind but non of you would know who the hell they are being from Overseas and all. Our Aussie Music is pretty good and the bands can play so well live. I love going to see our home grown music live.

Chef, MADDOG either of you two seen The Angels Live??? Fuck Doc Neeson knows what the hell he's doing, even now. That is one band that gets better with age, especially live.

Andrew my friend I hope this helped you out. I love Metal but I can't always find someone game enough to go to the concerts with me, so I haven't seen all the groups that I would have liked too. I always fucking miss Pantera by a day or two, I always seem to be away somewhere when they make it, but I have a Date with Xander when we finally meet to go see them. Xander that's still on right???

Anyway I hope this helped you out Andy baby, just to answer your original question though ..... Meatloaf followed closly by Faith No More :D

First concert and the best: Alice Cooper, May 5, 1973...I was 12 years old and had snuck out of my house to see him. I've been to every concert of his since that time, in Tucson and/or Phoenix, Az, and always leave breathless, mind reeling, seeing stars, soaking wet, craving a cigarette, feeling like I 've just spent hours "wrasslin" and f**king the devil, and grinning like a looney tune. TMI?

Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, David Bowie, The Tubes, B-52's, Blondie, the Rolling Stones, Cheap Trick, the Eagles, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Kansas, Iggy Pop, George Thorogood, Megadeth, Harry Nilsson, New York Dolls, The Turtles aka Flo and Eddie, The Who, Led Zepplin, Lynrrd Skynrrd *sp?*, REM, Fabulous Poodles, Steely Dan, ,Soul Asylum, The Pills, Meat Puppets, Bush, Patti Smith, Metallica, The Runaways, Queen *RIP Freddie Mercury*, Frank Zappa *RIP* ...... ummmmmmmmmm......have to snap back into the present after that wonderful strut down memory lane.

.... the list goes on and on. Combine live music and sex and what do you get? The best of all possible worlds. *wink* Try it....you'll like it!! You'd think the UN would realize that music can bring more people together than anything else. At least I believe it can.

Just IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!! *RIP John Lennon*

*and RIP Ian Dury...I didn't get to see you in this world; I won't let that happen in the next*

slugs and fishes and breaking dishes

Forever,

DUH!!!

Sheeeeesh......major Bermuda Triangle of the brain....how else to explain not mentioning Aerosmith *be still my heart!!* and Meatloaf *Stop Right There!*

Listen closely, my friends.....they're playing our song.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Forever madly in love with Xentharin,

Suzy you and I need to get together :D

I like you, and your tatse in music babe :)

Hi Chef, I could never really get into Pink Floyd but I've seen a video of there's and it was pretty good visually the effect's. So what other James tracks do you like ?. I just love there music all of it.

Hi Xander and pleased to meet ya ,I salute a casualty of stage diving I once got knocked out stage diving at a Nuclear Assault gig . I saw U2 on the Joshua tree tour at Elland rd football ground I really enjoyed them but of late I'm really not into them. What year did you see Metallica at Rokskilde ? it was 86 when I saw them. Claw finger ?

Hi Mortto I've only really heard a few Eagles tracks but Hotel California I do like ,never heard any Allman brothers or George Thorogood sorry.

Hi Deborah , Pluto Monkey rule the three tracks are great , when they tour I'll be there to see them and I agree with Flagg you should have been at Leeds to blow limp 182 away.

Hi Flagg you felt old, I felt ancient it was my 32nd birthday on the Sunday at Leeds I know what you mean and the Saturday was the worst day I thought anything to do with Slipknot maybe.

I've always wanted to see Rage since hearing Killing in the name in 93 it made me sit up and listen the last time a record did that was 83 when I got hold of Metallica's Kill em all on import it's music that no matter what I can listen to and when I finally got the chance on the Saturday ,well they where as good has I thought they would be and then some for me.

The AC/DC gig was in 86 at donnington park I was not a fan of there's but after seeing them live and all that goes off I enjoyed it a lot and are a great live band.

Now Beck I enjoyed and his DJ when he mixed those two record's and played smoke on the water with them COOL .

Pulp I like but I think they should have played more old one's all I seem to remember were new tracks.

and yes blimp 182 were crap I was very disappointed in them

Hi Thumper "Up the Hammer's" . I've seen Maiden a few times but the best as got to be when they did a warm up date for the beast on the road tour and they played at my local collage totally wild night.

Hi Bobtoad not my type of music Weird al yankovic what instrument does he play;).

Hi Rosebud you've never been to concert come here *big hug*

That's it - we're all gonna have to take Rosebud to a concert. Who do you wanna see, baby?

Hi Bobtoad not my type of music Weird al yankovic what instrument does he play.

The accordion, I think.

My all-time live faves (off the top of my head, and bear in mind these aren't necessarily my favorite bands, just the best live shows) are Tool, Quicksand, Tricky, The Ramones, and The Sundays.

Hi Bobtoad not my type of music Weird al yankovic what instrument does he play.

Acordion and body organ :D

This is part of my application for the old folks home but the last concert I saw was R.E.M. at a really sleazy bar in Cleveland called The Pirates Cove. The Chronic Town EP was out and Murmur was still unreleased but they were traveling by van across the country promoting it. They did not really have an opening act but there were these guys from Minneapolis who were also doing a van tour and they were overnighting in Cleveland so they got asked to open. It turned out to be The Replacements with Paul Westerberg and Bob Stinson. The show was great so if that had to be my last concert, I picked a good one.

Don't be mad Nicole petal but I hate Meatloaf I saw him at Knebworth in 85 he was hobbling around with a cast on his leg and everyone throwing bottles and mud at the stage.Deep Purple were on the same bill and I enjoyed them .One band i really enjoyed that day was Blackfoot.

Like I keep saying I love early Metallica the first three albums are AWESOME don't really like the stuff there doing now but the album of cover version's they did was great. When Cliff died I was gutted and had Cliff Burton R.I.P. tattooed on my arm the day after his death luckily I had the great honour of meeting and chatting with him. Jame's has got sing thats Metallica.

Kiss well with make up good, without FUCKING CRAP. I think it was the Animalize tour and I saw one of the worst performance's ever the support band were Bon jovi the were dire ,no good , pathetic, then about 12 to 18 month's later super stars fun world this music business.

I hope ya still my friend after the Meatloaf incident .:)

saw new model army a few times many years ago. they put out some awesome music, well the latest album didn't impress me to much but they really put on a good show.

the pouges with shane was a good time. never saw a drunker band than the pouges.

don't forget the local scene. i have seen many local bands that rocked out, good energy in a small setting= great time by all.

least i forget mary prankster, the best girl rocker out there.

No I'm not ... so there :p

Look everyone has different taste's in music and I respect that. Meatloaf was brilliant when I saw him and not so good when you saw him, just like the rest of us, they have bad days too.

As far as Metallica is concerned, I fully agree that their older stuff is better than their newer SHIT, (yes SHIT) for a band that said they would never sell out, they have certainly done that in my eyes. I haven't bought anything of theirs since the Black Album and lets face it that stays at the back of my collection (Flame away).

Back to Meatloaf for a minute ... when I saw him he hadn't toured for awhile and he blew my mind (as I said earlier), I also went to see R.E.M with my sister, she goes to concerts with me and the other way round. Now they started their tour in Australia, Perth I think (the Drummer got married there I believe), anyway they were okay, his voice was good and the music was good but, and I have never seen this before, probably because we get everyone last, he had a music stand where he had the words written down and he spent more time looking at them than he did performing, which took away from their performance in my eyes. Never mind I guess that is just something that we had to deal with at that point, it was just a little odd.

I guess performers have their favorite places to perform too, so they put more effort and love into that spot than another. I have been fairly lucky with the concerts I have been too, as the performers have seemed to enjoy themselves.

I still say you can't beat the rawness of a performance though, take Steven Tyler, he gets on that stage and gives it his all, no matter what he is doing and no matter how badly the crowd is acting, to me that is the best sort of concert. Mike Patton did the same when I saw FNM, he threw himself all around that stage I thought he would be dead by the end of the night, but it's what made the concert, well that and the fact that they Fucking rocked. You can't ever take away from that in a performer.

Also isn't it odd that most of the answers on here are from people that like the more Hard Rock music, I haven't seen any Classical music Fans have their say yet. Come on I know your out there (Angel), lets here your views too.

Andrew Babe this has been a brilliant thread, glad you started it. Music means so much to so many different people in so many different ways. Just from the answers so far you can see how passionate people get about their Music. I know that if I'm down or depressed all I have to do is put a CD on and listen to my Favorite group of the time (because we all go through stages) and it brings me back up. Thanks for starting this :)

THE RAMONES!!THE RAMONES!! THE RAMONES!! Second only to Alice Cooper, the most amazing band I've seen live has to be the Ramones. How I forgot to mention them, I have no clue since I named my son AFTER Joey and Marky!!!
They perform dead-on to the audience, not turning and playing at each other or turning their backs to walk around; they are right there, facing you, watching you, performing FOR you. And they never stop. I think the usual length for one of their songs is like 2-2 1/2 minutes and they never stop and never slow down....move from one to the next bing-bang-bong!!! I attended one concert that was festival seating *do they even do that anymore* and was standing right below where Joey Ramone stood and sang---man, but I was one happy camper THAT night!!!! What a view, straight up and over the top---bingo.

Nicole? It would be outrageous to go to a concert with you; we could have a blast!!

Slugs and fishes and smashing dishes.

Forever,

Suzy is a headbanger!!!

The Ramones are my favorite...but alas' I did nit get the opportunity to see them live...fuck fuck fuck! You are so right when you say they play to the fans...that is the most important thing in a live show...energy and look like you are having fun! Can't stand to watch someone staring at their amps or their fretboard or the drummer...MOVE DAMNIT!
That's probably why you won't see many classical music responses here.....I dig classical but is it fun to watch? NAHHHHHH baby NAHHHHHH!

The Ramones were/ARE rock'n'roll at it's most pure....Loud simple and fun!

*gotta find a way to convince Johnny to get it back together*

After reading your response I now lust after you Suzy....excuse me while I get a bagel....hehehehe

"Wanchewtreefaw!"

The best concerts I've seen in terms of all around sound, spectacle, and performance was probably David Bowie's Sound and Vision tour (in which projection equipment was specifically invented for the tour). I saw him at Deer Creek and in Chicago. He was fabulous.

As for live bands, I have seen several that kick serious can. My favorite is House of Large Sizes, a band from Iowa that everyone should be listening to nowadays. They should rule the airwaves. Another awesome live band is the Smithereens. We've seen them five times, and I even proposed to my wife during one of their shows. Others are the Reverend Horton Heat, the Amazing Crowns (I saw them both together last year - WOW!), and the Lords of Acid (love that lesbian bondage finale!). I plan on seeing the New Bomb Turks and Zeke next month, and I'm sure that show will be CRAZY.

I've heard great things about Brian Setzer's live shows, and I wish I could've seen Morphine live. God rest Mark Sandman.
