Obama wants to empty the jails of drug offenders....we're talking dealers, simple possession rarely results in jail.

So who should go to jail?

I personally think prison should be reserved for violent offenders and it should be a one way ticket, once you go in it's for life. It's insanity to me to lock up someone, expose them to that hellish environment and then let them out again and expect them to behave.

I think non violent offenders (and violent offenders where there were extenuating circumstances) should be punished in other ways, such as fines, community service, or if incarceration is warranted then some kind of low cost minimum security facility.

So yeah let the non violent drug offenders out. Along with the prostitutes and petty thieves.

My thinking is to offer the non-violent offender a deal that includes a significant fine and the purchase of a performance bond for when they relapse. They plead nolo contender, adjudication is suspended pending no further problemos for one year. If they relapse before the year is up they get their tickee validated. They walk when the fine is paid and the bond is bought. No court, no probation. Set the fine at the value of the drugs. That way a kid with a few joints walks with a $50 fine. Double the fines when frequent flyers come in.

And if they cant pay the fine build a camp where they get 3 hots and a cot, and are available for residents to use for free labor.
