What would happen if a comet hit Mars?

we would have....

Red sky at night,
Sailor's delight,
Red sky at dawn,
Martians be gone!

To put it simply: BOOM!

It's happened before, it'll happen again.

A nice, big 'splosion, but I don't think it would disturb too many Martians.

A friend of mine on Facebook posted about this the other day. She's a Mathematical Astronomer with the ESA and this is what she said:

"Mark Your Calendars!"

That's right, save the date, 19 October 2014. That's the day that 'Comet C/2013 A1' might impact Mars. If this same comet impacted Earth, it would be considered a "Global Killer". This comet is larger than the one that killed the dinosaurs 65-Million years ago. Estimates put it's size somewhere between 8km to 50km in diameter. If it does impact Mars, the resulting explosion would be around 20-Billion Megatons, that's 1.3-Billion Hiroshima bombs. The impact would be so bright and devastating that it would be visible with the naked eye from Earth.

Weren't the dinosaurs killed by an asteroid, not a comet? There is a difference. One is an ice ball. One is a giant hunk of rock and iron that will make a much larger mess.

That said...it would be fun to watch Mars explode. Assuming all those movies from the 1950's about Martians attacking Earth were historically accurate, those little green bastards are owed a bit of payback.

My question to that is 'Where is Earth predicted to be in relation to this event and what are the chances of impact by debris?'

I'm just assuming here but if it's a Global Killer for earth then Mars is probably not going to exist any more, which would mean that there would be some rather large pieces of former planet flying around. Or Mars will be literally pulverised into dust but I'd still like to know

You have to keep in mind, it would be traveling at 40,000mph at impact. Mars's atmosphere is only 10% of earth's, so it wouldn't even get singed before hitting and at that speed, there would be little to no difference between a comet and meteor.

Also, a comet will not cause Mars to explode. It will cause a big ass creator and that's about it.

Ever get hit in the face with a snowball travelling 30,000 miles per hour?

Maybe peices of it will follow the last surviving baby that the Martians rocket away from their dying planet and those peices of Mars will cripple the super powers this child developes on his new planet.

Just sayin'

Ah good point. I didn't think about the atmosphere.

Damn air...always be ruining my scientific analysis.

It's a fair argument
