What we do for Minimum Wage

I think the only job where I was paid minimum wage was when I worked on a serving staff for a catering company in high school...and that was only for the first few months.

Who else is working through the Holiday?

In my salad days (circa 1971) I made minimum wage delivering trash. I hung advertising handbills on doorknobs and gate handles all around the San Francisco Bay Area.

Get to the downtown SF warehouse at 5 AM. Jump in a big van filled with stacks of paper flyers topped with other workers: bums, freaks, illegals, idiots, of all ages and genders. Walk all day distributing trash. Steal mail from porches. Smoke pot and opium, chug cheap strong wine, piss in gardens, use a water pistol to shoot ammonia at nasty dogs. Eat cheapest food for lunch. Ride the van back to the warehouse and be paid a dollar an hour, cash. Those who showed up every weekday got the balance of 65 cents per hour on Friday. Hey, I could make sixteen bucks a day and only spend a couple bucks on burgers and red port!

There were good moments, including sex, play, splendid sunrises, more opium -- and not-so-good moments, like dog bites and suspicious cops. Whatever. It was better than working for a living.
