Already put this on another thread...but

...I would go to downtown St. Louis where this old housing project stands boarded up and abandoned after the welfare class left it in shambles after just being 8 years old. I would buy the place, pay to have it all rehabbed and landscaped.

Then I would first go to the shelters where the families of domestic abuse victims are living and hiding and find those willing to start over. I would have them all sign leases with clauses forcing them to remain drug free, employed and willing pull themselves out of poverty. I would find or provide the education they need to become self sufficient for the sake of their children. I would find corporations willing to step up to the plate and hire them while they are being educated.

I would build an on site daycare for the children to young for school and for those who need before and after school supervision. I would have a computer lab there with qualified instructors teaching them business skills.

The place would be a fortress of protection with security on site. These families and others like them would be a model for how to succeed in getting off welfare and be a person who can hold their head up high knowing they have made something of their lives.

With help, not hand outs, these parents would know they have a real chance. They would not fall back into the same traps. Their kids would grow up knowing how to contribute and with pride.

Just imagine this. I would do this in Dallas and Seattle too. Those are the three places I would want to spend my time. Within three years, we could have 200+ families per location off the welfare roles. We could have single parents spending quality time with the kids on their days off from work not just working a second job to make ends meet.

I would do my best to help so many single parent households for the sake of all the kids living in them as well as the parents struggling to do the right thing.

I want to finish school so I can just laugh when I think of the high school guidance counselor who told me I wasn't smart enough for a four year college, and if I tried, I would never finish in four years.

Yeah, he told me community college would be more my pace. I can't wait till December, so I can march in his office, Bachelor's degree in hand, and tell him I did it in 3 1/2. I guess while I'm at it, I'll show him the acceptance letter for my master's program.

Good for you, Goddess. It is disgraceful that counselors treat young people in such a way. My son had a counselor that told both of us that he would never graduate from high school & that the idea of him becoming a sound engineer was a waste of time. I put Justin in a different school, he got all his work caught up in one semester & would have graduated 6 months before the rest of his friends had he lived. You will be doing a lot of people a great favor by proving that asshole wrong. I really enjoyed telling that counselor how well Justin was doing with school & that he had started his own DJ business & was working at a local office supply store. Congratulations on your accomplishments!!!!

But it sure takes a lot to want and be able to do that.

The thing I'd want the most is the wife and kids deal, but also to be remembered as a good person. There was a personality test that was posted in a thread a few months ago. One of the questions was something along the lines of "Would you rather be hatefully remembered or just forgotten about after your death". Picked to just be forgotten over the alternative.

There are two major things that I want out of life right now.

The one I am currently (Stubbornly, Doggedly and GODDAMNIT I WILL DO IT EVENTUALLY!) working on is being able to stop working for other people.

I will be able to quit my job and make a living doing the various random little things I currently do for hobbies and my own personal peace of mind. Right now I'm just working, doing mindless work because I have to.
But someday, I'll be able to make a living doing something I love doing instead of because I have to do it to survive. Damnit.

And I want a husband and 2 kids, a dog and my cat.

In a house, on a huge plot of land, surrounded by lots of trees, and I'll build a shelter so I can go back to taking in every lame, hungry, injured and stray animal that finds its way to my door.
