What happens to the Republican Party when Donald Trump dies?

Trump is not the Republican party.

That you somehow believe you can superimpose the desires and will of millions of voters into the image of 1 person whom you loathe merely because you're too stupid to understand how thoroughly you've been indoctrinated into it, only shows that you have no idea about anything at all.
So if Trump is not the Republican Party, it should be easy for you to describe what your party looks like after he dies. What policies do Republicans run on? Who is the party leadership?

Of course, "Becky" couldn’t resist going on to rationalize how / why President Biden and Democrats would be / are worse that a literal fucking right wing dictator.

"Becky" suggesting that Democrats are supporting / facilitating genocide is fucking insane.

While you excuse, or support, ethnic cleansing by the Biden administration, while being a fanatical supporter of Ukraine in the war, who have neonazis in their national guard. Domestically, Democrats pin all far right groups on Trump, while Biden the Democratic president supports Ukraine and Israel elsewhere, spending billions of our tax dollars on it. Democrats talk of Trump being the greater evil while they do all this.

See the hypocrisy?

The problem for Democrats isn’t Trump or Republicans. The problem is independents and disaffected Democrats. Biden isn’t every Democrat’s favorite choice. He’s the default because they don’t have a Bill Clinton or Obama and haven’t had one since at least 2016.

Depending on which source you look at, registered GOP voters only comprise somewhere between 25% and 35% of the national electorate. About 70% of those folks plan to vote for Trump in the GOP primaries this year. In other words, his base is a relatively small percentage of the national electorate. Yet Trump has been leading Biden for months in nearly all national polls and that small margin is widening, not getting smaller. He currently leads by a 3.5% margin in the RCP average.

When Trump is gone, the 70% of the 25%-35% will vote for someone else. There is no clear heir apparent. When Biden is gone, there is no clear heir apparent either. 2028 is wide open for both parties.
The Democrats don't need another Bill Clinton or Barack Obama. Their reigns are two big reasons as to why Donald Trump became president.

Trump courts far-right groups, and has for years. Dems don't have to "pin" shit. šŸ™„
Democrats fund Ukraine, while Ukraine has neonazi battalions in the Ukrainian national guard. They do the same with apartheid Israel. They are backing the far right in those places. And what about all the jihadist funding against Assad in Syria when Obama was president?

Obama got a pass for his warmongering, while Bush got criticism all the time.

Both parties hit ceilings with certain demographics.
You get it. I get it. Both leaders of their respective parties are short timers. 48 months from now, new personalities will be competing for oxygen in the virtual room and there’s a good chance one or both of the two presumptive 2024 nominees will be 6 ft underground.

Trump is the spiritual leader of the Soudbite faction of today's Republican party.
The Republican party is largely consumed with soundbites and optics and virtually nothing else.
What remains of the party platform is in tatters. They have no coherent strategery ("Stiggin it to teh Libz" is not a strategery). They have no leadership and those in the wings (DeSantis and Vivek) channel Trumps hatred but are not especially popular outside the fringe groups.

The core Republican demographic (White Male Christian Boomers) shrinks by 2% each election cycle and the tipping point (50-50) was 2020. Republicans need gerrymandering, court supermajorities and vote suppression from here on out to enact their misogynistic racist agenda.
Recent polls indicate that Trump is gaining substantially with Hispanic and black voters compared to 2020 (and 2020 was an improvement among those groups for Trump compared to 2016). One poll even had Trump at 22% among black voters, which is noteworthy when you consider that every Republican presidential candidate from 1964 onwards has only got between 6-16% of the black vote.

If this 22%, or anywhere near it, were to actually happen in 2024, I think the main reason it happened would be obvious. It would be due to prosecutors going after Trump, and a number of black voters empathizing and sympathizing with Trump's situation.

How many Democrats are actually thinking all these things through properly? The whole situation with Israel (Biden backing Israel strongly, expressing his Zionism etc.) obviously alienates Arab Americans hugely, and in key states like Michigan, yet the Democrats seem to act like it doesn't really matter much, as if the voters will still turn out for them and as if there will be no political price to pay for the Democratic politicians who do this alienation.

Clinton (Bill, not HRC) and the Obamas were popular among Democrats while in office and remain so today.

Not with a lot of Democrats from the New Deal and Great Society days, or with that key demographic of Democratic support from those eras. Bill Clinton's presidency sold them down the river with NAFTA and attacks on welfare. Outsourced jobs, smaller cities, towns and rural areas suffering and feeling abandoned, while Clinton said "those jobs are gone and are not coming back" with attacks on welfare on top of that. Barack Obama bailed out Wall Street and nothing fundamental changed. Without this, Donald Trump doesn't become US president.

Back in the 1990s, they called it "The Third Way", what Clinton was doing.

Trump captures the anger and rage that people feel. There are different reasons as to why different people feel that anger and rage, ranging from lost jobs/welfare and the loss of a sense of community and feeling abandoned, to hating the decline of religion, to hating the demographic changes that are happening in the country, with them feeling very threatened by all these changes and a desire to strike back. Trump wields them all together, using the anger and rage that he himself also feels as an "outsider" never really accepted into the club. A lot of this anger is decades in the making, worsened by crises like the 2008 crash and its fallout, and the Covid situation.

Because of the different reasons for people being angry, the Republican policy platform is rarely specific, and Trump himself likes to change depending on whatever helps him at a given moment, hence it's full of soundbites.

Clinton and Obama won second terms handily, and both were treated as heroes at Democratic conventions as they were departing. Trump lost his bid for a second term and Biden is way behind where Clinton and Obama stood 11 months ahead of their reelection bids. This election looks a lot more like 1980 and 1992 than the elections of 1996 and 2008.

(Quoted for posterity and stupidity)

And "BECKY" Is "angryā€, so "Becky" and their ilk are going to sabotage (smear) President Biden and the Democrats, JUST LIKE IN 2016, and ensure another Drumpf presidency that will further cement the judiciary into a conservative, theocratic, corporate serving monolith:, and set back the progressive ideals "Becky" CLAIMS to champion for another 50 years.

🤬

Well played "Becky".

Trump is the ulitimate expression of an unearned sense of entitlement to express anger and resentment. He was raised to be a rich boarding school bully, where he honed his resentment against women, minorities, and really the human race in general.

People who hate being accountable for their own unhappiness and are always looking for scapegoats love Trump. Making excuses for this behavior is a form of mental masturbation by those who also shirk personal responsibility.

A danger in the sense that Trump becomes America's Caesar. He almost did it on January 6 2021. If congresspeople had been harmed that day (or worse) before the 2020 presidential election results had been certified, Trump could have declared a national emergency because of the scenes on Capitol Hill and stayed in power until new elections were called. Had this happened, the 2020 presidential election results would never have been certified, as if they had never really happened.

I don't think a lot of people grasp just how close a coup came to actually happening that day.

I agree that Biden is awful. I've always been angry at his warmongering and the resulting inflation, and how Democrats who never stopped moaning about Trump always seem to give Biden a free pass, even for ethnic cleansing and potential genocide in Gaza. As Biden supports Israel in that, Democrats over here talk of Trump being a greater evil. Greater than genocide?
If you want to talk about Biden and the Democrats, you should start a thread about that. This thread is about what happens to the Republican Party when Donald Trump dies.

Well, it would certainly leave a vast hole in the Republican Party waiting to be filled. (And no, I'm not talking about Lindsey Graham or Kitara Ravache.)

Biden is way behind where Clinton and Obama stood 11 months ahead of their reelection bids.
Clinton and Obama weren't running against the same opponent they'd already beaten once, or the most controversial president in living memory, never mind both.

My bet is that there will be a lot of folks who refuse to believe it and he'll gain Elvis is still alive conspiracy theory status.

Agreed...for a little bit, anyhow. He's old.

I think only 60% of MAGAts believe he's immortal. šŸ¤”

Thank you for all the on-topic replies. I figure I should take a stab at answering my own question.

I agree that when Trump dies there will be widespread disbelief on the right, and wild conspiracy theories that he was assassinated by the ā€œdeep stateā€.

As for the Republican Party, I don’t think it has a future on the national stage. More and more, it’s just the ā€œwhite grievanceā€ party. It will still win some local elections and send people to Congress, but we will never see another Republican President.

Are people that dumb? Maybe they are. Maybe they do sit in their trailers and think, 'Heck that guy used to be such a nice person firing folks on TV, and now he's been found liable for defrauding a pets charity, blocking the renting of apartments to black people, sexual assault, taking money from foreign hostile governments, electoral fraud, threatening witnesses, trying to overturn the constitution, disrespecting the military, the disabled, gays, anyone who might oppose him within the party or elsewhere despite the fact that he used to be a Democrat. He pushed massive tax cuts for millionaires but one day I'll be a millionaire so I'll vote for him. And that's the fault of all those commies over there.'

Personally, I think the support by the US for Israel whilst it's committing genocide is appalling but Trump is hardly supporting the Palestinians either.

Clinton and Obama weren't running against the same opponent they'd already beaten once, or the most controversial president in living memory, never mind both.
That’s my point. Clinton and Obama were very popular. Clinton easily defeated a respected senator and WWII hero. Obama easily defeated a former governor and successful businessman. Biden is no Bill Clinton or Barak Obama. He’s so unpopular he’s behind in the polls against the most controversial candidate in living memory.

That ^ will only be a future reality if the youth in America really are generally less racist, less homophobic, less sexist, less religious. and less sociopathic.

"republicans" are hard at work indoctrinating large numbers of young people to carry the (police) baton and the (white Christian nationalist) banner.

The future IS riding on the youth of America, but the "progressive" youth seem bound and determined to hand America to Drumpf (again), and then, to whoever follows in the undoubtably bloody "republican" succession.

"Progressive" zealots, like our own ā€œBeckyā€ here on the PB, are so extreme that they ALMOST make a "republican" candidate seem palatable.

The youth vote in the 2024 presidential election will go a long way towards deciding the future of the "republican" party AND the Democratic Party.

I am only cautiously optimistic at this point that the "progressive" youth will meet the moment

🤬
