Nasty... trust isn't something that can be outlined. A lot of it is just good instincts about people (only don't tell starfishie i said that ).

I don't trust easily, but most of the people who post here will probably not cross paths with me in real life. So I don't worry about trusting them a lot. If PC is really a drag queen from Des Moines... or DCL is really a high school janitor in St Paul with a fake leg and no teeth... I just don't care. They're both entertaining and intelligent as hell. And damn sexy where they live inside my head.

If I was going to meet someone in real life, there would be phone calls (both directions)... there would be photo exchanges... web cam viewing... and the first meeting is always in public. Beyond that, it's no different than meeting someone new a the grocery store. You click or you don't and life goes on.

For me, I have a very good bullshit meter and it works just fine in cyber life as well. When somebody is lying about something as basic as their gender, they will leave clues. I guess it helps to be observant.

but at the same time, for old reasons involving deep scars, i can't bring myself to trust anyone fully in cyberspace

i've never talked to anyone i've met in here or in chat on the phone, or exchanged more than e-mails, or showed my picture, or even named the town i live in

that's caused some pain in my life, but it's something i can't seem to overcome

so i'm wrapped in duality...i trust you all, but at a distance
