Killing Joke - Night Time (album)

Heard them first on the surprisingly eclectic soundtrack to "Need For Speed Underground 2" (where they featured with "The Death And Resurrection Show"), bought a Best Of a few years ago and now, while writing my weird urban fantasy thing, I've dug into their back catalog for real. Fantastic band.

Powerwolf's new song
https://youtu.be/po-u-V6GiEk

By now, Powerwolf are a poor man's AC/DC. They have templates for three songs (a slow one, a stompy, catchy one and a somewhat fast one) and vary the ingredients by a tiny amount. The one linked above is the fast one and it sounds almost exactly like the fast ones on their earlier albums. The garnish is spruced up - more movie score intro than usual, but the structure is familiar, the sodding key seems to be the same as in most other Powerwolf song, the organ orgasms and as far as the lyrics are concerned, you could get horribly drunk in four minutes if you pop a shot each time "Christ", " God", "Lord" or "Hallelujah" gets tossed about. It's basically the Manowar drinking game, only with Christian verbiage instead of "Battle", "Brothers" and "Steel".

Sadly, Powerwolf are not nearly as accomplished composers as AC/DC are. Their dead horse is a rancid, red stain on the floor after a mere seven albums, of which I didn't buy the last two - they were stale back then and it only got worse. A pity. I like my metal with a bit of an occult tinge, but Powerwolf, much like Sabaton, are just sad and boring.

To end this rant on a positive note: Listen to Unto Others (formerly Idle Hands). They lack the overt kitsch and lavish choir work, but they do sound like the creatures of the night Powerwolf so desperately want to be.

Dance With The Dead - B-Sides and Outtakes, Vol. 1

I think some of their best work is on this compilation. Songs have a more "metal" bend than on their regular albums which I like very much. The mix of crystalline '80s synths and fierce metal shred tickles my pleasure center.

Two recent rediscoveries: Scarlatti's piano sonatas and Sonny Landreth's blistering version of Key to the Highway.

Water Movements

Gleb Kolyadin

Evening musical Litsters.

Water Movements is the lovely new release from one half of iamthemorning. Other then some guitar on song five, it's just Kolyadin and his piano.

Be safe and well all. Peace, love and happiness.

Leah - The Quest.

My lady love and I have recently started to play D&D Fifth Edition. "The Quest" is the perfect musical background. A bit of folk, a bit metal and it oozes a ton of high fantasy spirit. Leah has a beautiful voice and a gift for extremely catchy hooklines. Still, the whole thing is kinda relaxed and unobtrusive.

Sounds like a must-listen.

A Type O Negative playlist.

Pete Steele was one of my bass guitar heroes. His distortion and riffing reduced the band's actual guitarist to a "color splashes" guy. Wrote some fiendishly clever and sexy lyrics too.

Therion - Secret Of The Runes (album)

Very close to being the ultimate combination of metal and classical music. Foregoing classic metal vocals in favor of a lead choir gives this album a very unique flavor.
