What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson

I mean, the rest of the record, too, but that song was the grabber.

Therion - Secret Of The Runes (album)

Very close to being the ultimate combination of metal and classical music. Foregoing classic metal vocals in favor of a lead choir gives this album a very unique flavor.

Love it!!

Sampled a bit and wasn't overly impressed. But I'm in a weird mood and not a lot is making sense to me. Might try it again later.

That's not unusual with Therion. They are not a "three minute hit song" band. You'd probably need to sit down and just listen to the whole thing. I mean, there are parts of their discography I can't stand, like that chanson cover album they released as an anniversary "event" thingy. Or their latest, which sounds flat-out boring, not fully comitting to either their classical or metal bends. Or maybe it's the weak mix. I don't know.

How sexy is it though?

Torchy and wistful in places, but sexy? Not to my mind; most of the tracks seem to refer to the loneliness and frustration of 80's gay life, and the impersonal nature of London's sleazy underbelly; 'Tainted Love' is a classic, but it's definitely not a romantic, moody piece, and the same is true of all the other tracks, especially 'Bedsitter', 'Entertain Me', 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye', 'Seedy Films', and 'Youth'. The thing that keeps bringing me back to this album is the moody, 'wall of sound' of David Ball's synth keyboards and Marc Almond's stunning voice, his melodic range and tricks of phrasing and expression captivated me the first time I heard it, and I've never let it go.

Thanks for the appetizing words. I'll give it a whirl when I can. With a title like "Non Stop Erotic Cabaret", I just had to ask about the sexiness factor. :)

Sunset -- Lonnie Liston Smith.

Yeah, more of him. GOooood stuff. Slow smooth funky jazz.

From The Soul With Love -- Deva Epica

New Age, sort of.

Yeah, I always took that album title as intentional irony. Paired with the music, it makes me think of being in a red-light district where everybody is marketing physical pleasures that don't touch that loneliness. 'I never knew you, you never knew me, say hello, goodbye...'

Marc Almond is one of those singers I can usually recognise from a few bars, even if I've never heard the song before. Such a distinctive voice.

Coil - Tainted Love

This one came out a couple of years after the Soft Cell version, and like every other 'Tainted Love' since 1981 it's clearly a cover of Soft Cell's version; Coil and SC were on the same record label, and Marc Almond even makes an appearance in the video.

But in the three years between 1981 and 1984, 'tainted love' had acquired some very grim connotations, and Coil runs with that to produce something new. One of the bleakest songs I've ever heard.

Jeg er Guden, I er Tjenerne - Myrkur

Excellent, excellent, excellent!!!

Just don't ask me to pronounce it.
