I'm walking in a parade in dowtown Atlanta (not my idea).

What are you doing? Or is it just another day in the life?

I'll read about it in the newspaper, as always. It is about on the same level as President's day or Columbus day. Just "there." Of course, I don't live in Atlanta. We have no parade that I am aware of.

I'm going to work today, just like any other day. I heard on the radio that less than 25% of companies give time off for this holiday. I'd be surprised if it was even that high around here.

it's a holiday for me - no special plans except to enjoy the time off from work ~

I have to work! So I will change a few diapers to celebrate.

For me, it is just another day, but I'm curious...the parade? Did you not want to participate? If not, why not?

Sitting

Sitting here on lit for a little while longer before I do my daily exercise and then sleep for work tonight.

I've already given out about 700 passes to schools for my restraunt in honor of MLK day. But that's just part of my job.

Today, I'm planning laundry and maybe a visit to my grandpa's house.

oh yes i see on my calendar that it is Martin Luther King Day ...

he was a great American ... and he is in my thoughts today ...

even though it is a regular work day here in Canada ...

pssst

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed lotta people but it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Just a day. Raised the flag, going about my work, Jonesing for a stock market report. Wife's working, I will teach class.

We don't have a parade here. We have about 1% minority and if my family moved away, it would plummet to .05%, I believe.

Not that I don't honor and recognize what the day represents. We don't do Holidays. This was the first year we did something for Christmas rather than go down to Mexico, plus the great weather, but I digress.

I often do...

I'm spending the day being Caucasian, as normal. How about some suggestions for what white folks could be doing to celebrate the day? I don't think there's a parade nearby.

It kind of sucks - when I was in High School we had month long planning for events not only for MLK day, but to prepare for Black History month.

We were immersed in history and planning and learning, and now being out of school and so worried about bills and food and work you kind of let things like that slip your mind.

Thanks Marxist :)

Me? I am working as usual... no. It will be busier then usual as many have the day off and a National Holiday of any sort means going to the nearest mall and spending yourself even more into debt. Yep. Not kidding.

isn't that what they make them for? No matter who it is celebrating, no matter how great he was. His holiday will be spent, instead of reflection on change and peace, in who can spend the most money on crap you don't need.

Personally though? I prayed as I lit my candle this morning. Prayed that he would understand, wherever he is, that it was meant well, but as usual, commercial uses overwhelmed the basic intent.

just kidding. i couldn't resist.

actually every mlk day i play melissa ethridge's "testify" and think about him a little. i know the song isn't about him, but the theme is the same.

this year i'm also thinking about the shooting at mlk high school on what would have been his birthday and also how chris rock said, "Martin Luther King! man dedicated his entire life to nonviolence, but wherever you are in america today, if you are on Martin Luther King Memorial Boulevard, there is some violence goin' on!"
