My 4th-grade textbook painted Alaska as a land of contrasts, noting the forbidding cold while also pointing out temperatures could also reach 100 degrees.
For some reason that information has stuck with me for over half a century. I don't recall ever seeing it hit 100 degrees anywhere in Alaska

It was an unofficial temperature, of course, but about this time of the year in 1981, the temperature out on the range on Ft Wainwright where we were shooting a high power metallic silhouette match sat at just over 100°F for the afternoon. Pretty fucking inhospitable, it was. The only good thing about high temps like that is that the bugs don't come out.
