Hi all,

How many of you can say that you have a hero(ine), or an idol... someone you feel is worthy of more than admiration? Are they sporting heroes, political, historical....or some other field?

And yes, please feel free to include the heroes and heroines who fell on that seemingly ordinary Setember morning... who went forward to give their aid, and ultimately gave their lives...

[shameless bump 'cos i'm genuinely interested]

I'd better put mine up there then... the obvious ones for me are my soccer heroes, as i dont trust any politicans.....

Sami Hyypia...a tall, blond, strong, Finnish defender. A fair player, a rock, ice cool, and determined.... everything i want to be, everything i look up to... he plays in my position, for the club i support, with my number on his back

Ian Wright... a retired black english striker.... his sheer enthusiam, his love of the game, his all out ecstasy when he scored.. his sense of humour, his bubbling personality that is totally infectious, his (hopefully now un-needed) struggle against racism.

Paul Ince...another black player...a midfielder... played for the greatest english and italian teams.... 110% commitment, 120% enjoyment.... a total team player, ferocious and very determined.

Can't really say I have a hero....

All I have is this idea of what it means to be heroic, the first word that comes is compassionate.

Compassion is heroic.

My hero is no where near as famous as most. My uncle......

He became a quadriplegic at 36 yrs of age after a diving accident. Initially, prognosis was that he would be a veggie salad for the rest of his life. Will, determination and prayers and not only did he learn little miraculous things like feeding himself, he got his driver's license, swam and hunted.

He even managed to have a child with his wife. Throughout all this, it was his attitude that kept him rolling....his sense of humor as well as his diligence. That coupled with family support helped him to accomplish many miracles. Eventually, he travelled to Rochester to counsel other quads through their difficulties and depression.

Throughout all this, he was married to my aunt who is one of the most energetic, vivacious people I have ever known. Their relationship was one that most couples strive for and fall short of.

Sadly, he died at age 51 of Cancer. Quickly. Hundreds of people attended his funeral and there are several memorials dedicated to him in this area. He was a true hero in my eyes. Not only did he overcome obstacles, he helped others to do the same.

Off the top of my head - in no particular order and for various reasons...

Octavio Paz - for writing poems that have enlightened my soul.

James Joyce - for writing words that have enlightened my mind.

Robert Anton Wilson - for writing philosophy that has expanded my universe.

My brother - for smiling and carrying on despite travails that make me wonder if I could be as strong in his shoes.

MissTaken...........

he does sound like a hero to me too......;)

I would say my brother.....He lived the way he wanted to and didn't worry about what others thought, yet was there with a helping hand always.....love kids, animals..etc... he died young. There is more but ........he just is....

Heroes in my Eyes

My sister Amy, who experienced so much pain in her short life and died at the age of 20, when she was finally happy.

My best friend Mark, who has survived the past 14 yrs with bone cancer, 12 yrs longer than the dr's expected.

My 96 yr old grandmother, who has seen most of the 20th century, lost 2 children, 4 grandchildren. Who has lived without my grandfather for 47 yrs, she said their love was enough to last a lifetime, wouldn't we all like a love like that.

My son, just because I love him more than life itself, because he loves me despite all my faults, because he's my best friend. He thinks the whole world is good.

Just a few of the heroes in my

My dad.

He worked hard all his life to provide for his family who are :

In 1962 and 1964 two children adopted from strangers.

In 1985 took in one of his adopted children's kids when a marriage failed and the kid could not finish college and care for the 2 small children he got custody of.

In 1985 took over care of the baby of his other adopted child when a medical emergency disabled the mother and she was unable to care for her baby child herself because of the many medicines she was required to take to recover.

He now cares for his wife who has stage 4 cancer.

The older I get, the more I realize how smart and loving and wondeful my dad is.

See.... I just think I know it all.

My dad really DOES know it all.
