You cannot not smile when you see them - Storm Chasers, Screamers, SWIFTS!!!!
The greatest bird? Only touching down to nest - everything else on the wing. I watched a pair mating in flight, i have seen then swoop over a Peregrine nest ledge to gather the plucked feathers from prey as they floated up. A young Swift will take to the air and fly for three years - non stop.
They ride the thermals, taking advantage of rain showers and the changing air pressure to feed on insects, leaving and arriving between the rain. I had one pass so close i heard the wings cut the air.
Wave to them, shout their name, rejoice as they fill the sky, when they leave, they take summer with them.
