Every year in the U.S., more than 50,000 mothers are severely injured during or after childbirth and 700 die. USA Today's investigation, "Deadly Deliveries," claims women are dying and suffering life-altering injuries during childbirth because hospitals are not following long-known safety measures.

Maternal death in the United States has been steadily rising. The U.S. now has the highest rate in the developed world. USA Today conducted a four-year investigation into the nation's hospital maternity wards and spoke to several families who lost loved ones and to women who were permanently harmed during their deliveries.

"Experts say that about 50 percent of the deaths of women from childbirth-related causes could be prevented if they were given better medical care and that's a really surprising thing given that we're one of the wealthiest countries in the world and we spend so much on medical care. We're not just talking about the women who die, we're talking about 50,000 U.S. women who are suffering life-altering harms," USA Today investigative reporter Alison Young told "CBS This Morning" on Thursday.

The top 10 list of the most dangerous states for women to give birth shows something interesting. Almost all are states where the Republican war on women rages on. Conversely, the top 10 safest states are those who don't treat women like chattel.

Most dangerous
1. Louisiana
2. Georgia
3. Indiana
4. Arkansas
5. New Jersey
6. Missouri
7. Texas
8. District of Columbia
9. South Carolina
10. Tennessee

Least dangerous

1. California
2. Massachusetts
3. Nevada
4. Connecticut
5. Colorado
6. Minnesota
7. Oregon
8. West Virginia
9. Hawaii
10. Wisconsin

Our whole "healthcare" system is fubar.

Again, why don't eyes and teeth count as part of "health insurance"?

The "red" states always want the most...but give the least.

After all..most of them want separation. By that I mean National.

I thought every state had Obamacare.

Insurance coverage is not the same thing as healthcare. But then you know that if you think about it for a moment. Instead you're just trying to score cheap points with what you think is a clever retort. While the maternal mortality rate climbs. I'm sure the family who loses an expectant mother will take solace in the ACA and appreciate your cleverness in their time of loss.

I think it's impossible to understand the basic Maxim that correlation does not necesarilly equal causation and be a progressive. Especially when other, more obvious causative factors are at play.

Every time there's a discussion that in any way touches on health care it's always ignored the obvious problem. Americans spend trillions of dollars on social programs designed in such a way that it is bound to help make our not actually very impoverished citizens fat; we have fat citizens.

Please, this is not the thread to make flippant responses at suffering expectant mothers.

But we know how you rightists feel about women's healthcare.

How are they expectant mothers when until the moment of birth it's just a collection of cells? You have to have a child to be a mother.

Besides, "women's healthcare" means removing that collection fetal tissue. Actual gestational Health much less the health of the fetus have no place in polite Society.

And I wasn't responding to someone trying to score cheap points?
Got it.

You are a tedious idealogue for someone who thinks themselves on the moral high ground.

Did you read the article?

You seem to pick the pettiest of battles and frankly it really makes you look pathetic.

The article is in regards to MOTHERS DYING GIVING BIRTH.

But you choose to be petty and pick on semantics. Sit down, somewhere.

Then you wonder why you get trashed so much on here.

Not a thing in the world wrong with pointing out your obvious intellectual inconsistencies. If you can't deal with your own intellectual inconsistencies that's nothing I can help you with.

Just like if the fetus dies it's not a baby if the mother dies she's not a mother. Why do you have a problem with this?

Again, read the god damn article.

It is not inconsistency. The fact that you think it is just demonstrates that you do not understand the reality of a pregnant woman. But please keep lecturing me on the morality of a situation you will never experience. I'm sure you're a veritable font of wisdom.

Was she incorrect?

You were not only incorrect, but callous.

Absolutely incorrect. It's supposed to suggest that somehow there's something wrong with people who live in red states that are losing their expectant mothers because it ignores the fact that living near a level 1 Trauma Center (large population centers) greatly improves your chance of survival in a high-risk pregnancy. Not to mention the fact that high-risk pregnancies are most often self-induced health crisis.

It was an attempt to score cheap political points with really bad presentation of completely irrelevant statistics that are not in any way broken down by the demographics that you would have to drill down into to do any kind of serious study.

Of course she was incorrect. When has she ever been correct?
And you were lapping up the cheap points like a puppy lapping up cat vomit. Because that's what you do.

You both seem very angry about me pointing out your intellectual inconsistencies. Are you able to understand why these are intellectual inconsistencies, or is that beyond your intellectual capability?

You either accept that the organism inside a woman is a baby or you don't. You don't get to decide that This Woman's baby is a collection of cells and that woman's baby is a baby. You have to choose. It's called intellectual consistency. Deciding you don't want to choose is not intellectually consistent.

Let me tell you something, it's flippant ATTITUDES like yours that keeps this shit happening in the United States. Turning a blind eye to the suffering of your fellow citizens.

No wonder this crap is mainly occurring in RED states.

You rightist ideologues continue to fuck up the country.

Over here arguing about semantics, sit down, somewhere.

Tedious idealogue.

Yes there is a direct correlation between the red states closing health centers which happen to provide abortions and leaving women in the rural areas with less (or no) options for healthcare. Especially in regards to pregnancy and neonatal care.

Keep lecturing on crap you don't understand. Next maybe you'll pontificate on personhood as part of your moral quest to control the very physical condition of pregnancy.

You sound upset, perhaps a bit hysterical even. I think you're far too delicate to participate in such a complex discussion. Maybe you ought to sit this one out. We don't want your blood pressure to rise after all.

Yeah, that must be it.

Couldn't be just that that's a listing of States ranked by order of gestational diabetes incidence, which just happens to coincide with poverty levels, which just happens to coincide with actual studies dealing with poverty and eating habits.
